Hi All,

Where my wheel spoke nipples meet the hub motor through the holes I find that there is a tiny bit of rust coming through on the surface. Therefore I was wondering if there is a type of spray that I could use straight after cleaning down the bike to aid the prevention of rust spreading any further? Please can someone help?

What, do I just spray some on a piece of cloth and rub into the holes of the motor, also is it safe touching anywhere around paintwork?

Don't forget under arms too;)............don't try this at home children:eek:

I seem to have got a long length of thin branch with leaves tightly screwed around and round my chain thingy today......could I just spray that off ?

Cos I was thinking it might need a sharp knife or razor blade.......spray sounds easier .....or maybe not

Spray works OK. See if you can get some fuming aqua fortis. It should do the job quite well, but don't get it it on your hands: it might sting a bit.

I assume you mean at the spoke head ?

I am surprised there is rust between the motor flange holes and the spoke head (spoke nipples are the bits that attach to the other end of the spoke thread where it enters the wheel rim) given the motor casing is probably aluminum and the spokes are stainless steel ?

Can you be a bit more specific about where the rust is. Is it near the wheel rim or the motor. Which bike is it?

Rust on spokes is unusual, especially this time of the year. It wouldn't surprise me if you have electrolytic corrosion due to dissimilar metals in contact with each other. Spoke washers are often the culprits. I remember one case where washers were fitted to the spoke head to stop it pulling through the motor flange and they were made of dutch metal. Dutch metal or brass and aluminium don't go well together and will cause even stainless steel to rust. In the case I remember, the rust was substantial.

Did you ever clean your chain as instructed?

Interesting Dave I tend to use brass washers in my small wheel radial builds on alternate flange holes where they are deeply counter sunk to take account of the spoke head. Time will tell I guess.

From what I have read you are more likely to see galvanic corrosion between the stainless steel and the aluminum than the brass and aluminum.

The difference from copper (+.34) to aluminium (-1.66) is nearly twice the difference from iron (-.44) to aluminium. As you know, you can make a battery out of copper and zinc. Aluminium is even further from copper than zinc, so it makes a better battery. As long as you don't go out in the rain, you'll be OK. Actually, it's the salt-water on winter roads that is far worse because rain water is not very conductive.

Thank you for your concern Jerry, and thank you for explaining my situation for me in better detail. When i'm cleaning down the hub motor I use Mud off spray and I wonder if that chemical has anything to do with it. There is no visible rust on the motor flange itself, only in some of the motor flange holes.
