Wisper charge indicator?

Hello all,

Have just got a Wisper 705, and am confused by the charge indicator lights on the handlebars. It was delivered supposedly fully charged, but one red light was showing, which I took to mean it need charging. That didn't take long, but then it still had the one red light showing .....

Have I got it wrong? And gave I messed up the battery conditioning by not running it down fully the first time?

Thanks for any advice!

Hi sueru are you sure that you are not confusing yourself with the pedal assist lights? Switch the bike off then turn back on press the plus button on the console to see if the red lights increase in number. Some bikes may operate differently by displaying lights or numbers.

Thanks for your quick reply, but yes, I know the difference between the pedal assist lights and the charge indicator!

Although on checking again I see it's a "capacity indicator" - is that related? Sorry, I know more about horses than bikes!

You cannot do any harm to the battery by not running it down.

The lights on the display don't mean much, so don't take too much notice of them. Once you get used to their behaviour, you should only worry if their behaviour changes.

To check your battery, you need a voltmeter. Check directly on the battery terminals with it switched on. It should be between 41.5v and 42v after charging.

Many thanks. I guess what I'm trying to find out (and not putting it very well!) is how can I tell how much battery I've got left on its first few runs while I'm running the battery down?

Have got to ride home at 2am up a really steep hill and would rather not run out of juice!

The other display on the handlebars - the capacity indicator - seems to be irrelevant, is that right?

Thanks again!

You don't have to run the battery down. Charge it up every time you use it, then you get more power and less chance of running out.

Thanks - yes, i realise that for the future, but it says in the manual that you SHOULD run it down the first couple of times to condition the battery. That's what I'm trying to do, without getting stranded .....

Did you condition your mobile phone or laptop battery? It's exactly the same type of cells.

Sueru, I have just bought a Wisper 905 and you are right, the manual tells you do charge the battery fully (12 hours), then ride the bike until it is almost depleted, before charging it fully again. Then use the bike as normal, charging as needed.

As to the charge indicator lights (the upper ones above the assistance level lights), are you sure that you really only have the red light on? The three green lights are very dim, and in sunlight I can't see them unless I shield them with my hand and peer at them. I asked the dealer and apparently it is a common problem. The red light is very bright, but the ones you really need to see are hardly visible. Also, bear in mind that if you use a lot of power (such as the hand throttle) the green lights will go out for a while until the voltage recovers to the normal level - again in the handbook.

Hope that is some help.

That is correct as far as the bike's manual is concerned. My point to the OP was that on the Wisper the three green lights are not easily visible, and it would be easy to think that only the red light is lit.
