I have the same problem with my optibike external battery that came with the bike
it's been sat for 12 months and wont charge up and I will buy a ping as a replacement
and get some Anderson Powerpoles 45A's to join the Opti cable to the battery!...which sits in the bag on the Topeak MTX rack
and jobs a good em :)

Frank, we are talking to him now, I think you know we would never tell a customer to go away.

We will find a way to help. However customers must take some responsibility for the way the bikes are looked after.

I too have just suffered a battery failure on my Wisper 905SE (36V 14A) which surprised me because it had not been showing signs of deterioration. Although not used much over the winter I kept it just below fully charged, and when I first used it for work (11 miles each way) it performed well on the first couple of runs. However on the third run it started off intermittently cutting out, although settled down after a mile and performed normally. After recharging at work it lasted 3 miles and then failed completely, after that I could coax it to last a couple of minutes on low power before cutting out again for 10 minutes - it was a slow ride home!

I've tried to treat battery carefully, never using below 5mph to limit draw. The battery is 2y / 1,200 miles old - I was expecting more but is that par for the course? If so then 50p/mile is pretty expensive compared to petrol!

Hi Andy

This reads as if it is a connection problem, especially as the battery cuts out intermittently and was working perfectly on your first two commutes.

When was the last time the bikes was fully serviced and all the connections were cleaned?

You may find cleaning and putting WD40 in the connections will cure the problem.

All the best

Thanks for the suggestion, tried a good clean up but to no avail. The battery appears fully charged to the charger, but lasts only 1/4 mile before voltage drops to the cut out level. This is the second battery I've had fail on my Wisper in 3 years. Could there be a problem with the charger, or the bike wiring that means battery is being over stressed in some way? Do batteries normally last longer than 2y 1200mile?

Hi Andy

I am sorry to hear about your continued problem.

Yes the batteries last a lot longer than 1200 miles over two years.

The best thing you can do is to get back to your suppler and discuss the situation.

Are you conditioning the battery over the winter months?

Regards

David

I thought they should last longer, and there was no hint of performance decline before this incident. It's my second battery failure in 3 years, on a second hand bike that was only a few months old when I bought it. Hence my concern that something is causing them to fail. I stored over winter at about 75% charge, it was in a garage though that probably dropped to 0 deg C in that coldest period. You supplied this battery BTW.

Battery technology has moved a long way forward over the last few years, but even on an older battery we are not seeing many problems. It could simply be a connection that has come lose in the battery. Thanks for your input, please let me know what the outcome is.

Best regards

David
