Hi

I think you were meaning the seat stem? That's no problem! I want to raise the front stem to make the handlebars higher but this appears to be impossible as it is all one with the forks? Is that correct? We can move the handlebars OK but it is the stem that is the problem.

Also having problems with the brakes - they have never been very good. I think it is too complicated to do ourselves and unfortunately I had to go quite a long way to buy the bike. Perhaps I will have to wait until I take it back for a service sometime?

Your brakes probably need the inside caliper adjusting. An allen key is used to adjust them, inserted through the spokes from the other side of the wheel. Turn it clockwise until the brake disk stops bending when you squeeze the brake lever, make sure it doesn't drag the brakes when they are off. It will click round a few degrees at a time.
I've found these loosen off after a while and need more adjusting than the other side.

The handlebars are adjustable without trying to raise the stem, or have you already done that?

I have adjusted the handlebars already but do need the stem higher - is this possible?

I will let Richard (my husband) have your instructions for the brakes and see if he can do this for me - otherwise we will have to take it to a shop somewhere.

Any ideas about raising the stem?
