I'm very inexperienced with e-bikes compared to most of the contributors here. But the way I look at it, with my cadence-sensing hub-motor bike on the road, is that by choosing how hard I pedal, I can choose my overall battery range.
I'm going to be going at about 15mph on the level anyway (unless I choose one of the lower assist levels). I can either ghost pedal and go at 14.5 mph using a lot of battery, or I can put in a large amount of pedal effort and go at 16mph using no battery. Or anything in between, totally seamlessly. It's great !
