Can you see enough thread in the notches to check left/right handedness?

Heating the chainwheel might help, also tapping gently radially all the way round.

Tried all that, looks like a normal thread, hope I haven't stuffed up the threads with my hamfisted attempts with a screwdriver and hammer

GIve the area a good slosh of lube incase there is rust holding the threads.
The four lug internal retainer I have not/seen come across before on a push bike chain wheel.

It's from a friend's very old Whoosh step-through pedelec.

you need a special 2 pin C - spanner to remove the silver cup.
Ask Andy for one.
You could use a pair of circlip pliers but it is a doddle with the correct tool.
Once removed, the motor will slide out but there is no need to remove the motor.
The magnet disc is just behind the silver cup. Lift the magnet disc out with a small screwdriver, clean it and refit.

There is one in the Men's Shed (Southbourne Bournemouth) where my friend Vaughan (his wife's bike) and I go on a Wednesday but it is just a couple of millimeters too small-always the way, ain't it.....
