Bike has been in heavy rain the past week, and now when I turn the key the led display flickers before I turn it on. Should I let it dry out over weekend?

If you've got an airing cupboard, stick it in there overnight on a bed of uncooked rice to draw any moisture out.

Wrap it in cling film to protect it from the worst of the rain when in use.

That's bad news. Water in the LCD can do a lot of damage. If it has screws in the bottom, open it to see what's going on. Do not switch on the battery until you're sure it's dry.

Its not an lcd, its just a simple led with the 3 modes. When I turned the bike on via this panel it worked fine and got me to work. Just find it strange that the lights are flickering before switching on. Its the 3 mode leds that are showing activity, so is it still the panel itself I should be looking at?

If it's flickering before you switch it on, there must be water in it, which is very bad for your bike. You can get a lot of serious consequential damage because there's a wire with battery voltage in it that sits right next to low voltage wires that go to your controller. Also the water can short the battery voltage to the CPU in the display, which will kill it permanently. The first you'll know about that is when the display won't stay on when you press the switch.

So the water is definitely in the control unit, not the controller yes? If so unscrew and dry out?

If it has screws to open it, then yes. Some are glued together. even with screws, they're glued a bit with poorly applied silicone, so you might have to lever it a bit to get it open. The water gets in though the gap if the silicone wasn't applied properly, or it comes up through where the cable exits, especially if you tilt the display towards you. Think about how you can seal it properly when you reassemble after it's totally dry. I prefer the non-setting butyl bath sealant stuff that comes in a tape.

Hmm, it's stopped happening now. Bike was parked under canopy at work, it gets windy in there, must have dried out a bit. I might just replace the display for an lcd, or would I need a different controller for that?

It depends on what type you have. Some are analogue and some are digital. Is there a number on it?

Only had it out once but don't remember a number. Not in a hurry to take it out again was a struggle to make it fit back into the enclosure. Issue has resolved but will let it dry out to make sure

I mean the number on the display, like 780, 810 or 890.

The number should be on the top side if it's there. they don't all have a number.

Without a number, you have to look at the connector at the controller end to see how many wires are in it and what colour they are.
