I have the above bike and was wondering if any one knew what the small black plasic thing attached to my down tube and just above the chain is for ?

It’s a chain catcher to stop the chain dropping off and getting jammed between the chain wheel and bottom bracket

Yes and sadly it doesn't always work as I've found out with my vulcan lol. Mind it was on some dodgy woodland terrain
