Upgrading the Woosh Rio from 36v to 48v.....or 52v!

Hi Team,

My Woosh Rio MTB is now a year and a half old and has covered over 1000 miles. It has been absolutely faultless and it still makes me happy every morning when I jump on it to go to work.

However, I would like a bit more power/speed. The Rio has an integrated 36 volt downtube battery, I can't find the exact name of it so its hard to find if there is a 48 volt or 52 volt version of this which is the same form factor and will fit in the frame. (See pic below)

If anyone could provide me with a link to a shop that sells them and help me out with which controller I should but and if I should also upgrade the back wheel as well. It currently has the Bafang SWX02 motor and the Lishui 17A controller.

Or should I just buy a new bike and sell the Woosh! (I'd rather not, I really like the Woosh!)

I think you may have a problem finding a 48 or 52v battery to replace yours and fit into the frame. Ask Woosh if there is enough rooom in the case, i'm sure he will know, but I have my doubts. I'm going to guess yours is a 4P10S pack, so 40 cells, but to get the same in 48v your will need room for 52 cells and 52v , 56 cells. One way to poss. overcome this would be to rebuild your case with high capacity 21700 cells in a 3P13S configuration, which would be 39 cells, but they are larger and still may not fit.

You can buy a reasonable used bike for £100, then fit whatever kit you want, or you can buy a really super bike for around £400 and have the ebike of your dreams.

There are 48v versions of your battery. I've seen them on several fat bikes. Just do a google image search to find them, however, there are a lot of ifs and buts when it comes to replacing your controller. If you know what you're doing, it's pretty straight forward, but if you don't it can be a minefield.

The first thing I did was email Woosh this morning, Andrew came right back and said that unfortunately they do not offer an upgrade for the Rio. Which is understandable, they bike they sold me conforms to UK spec and I'm asking if they can help me make it illegal!

I did look into this right after I got the bike but thought I would enjoy it and keep it stock until the warranty ran out.

I do remember finding out the exact name of that battery case which made it easier to search for them, but that was over a year ago, and your right, I did find a 48 volt version.

It's not illegal to run at 48v with a 20 amp controller as long as you keep the limited to 15.5 mph.

Good question - I believe its under the battery holder at the bottom of the downtube.

Like I said, the bike's never missed a beat so I've never had to diagnose or fix anything!

I'll need to check the dimensions to make sure its the same length when I get home but that seems like a decent price too.

Will I also nee a new charger for this? Chargers shut off based on volrages so the one I have now for the 36 volt battery will be now good?

So back to the this KT controller and battery upgrade, can anyone smarter than me confirm that that these are the parts I need:

The LCD comes with a long plug but looking at the diagram it looks as though it has a Julet connecter on the end of a short lead similar to my current LCD.

I don't think that the display has a julet connector sorry! why not go with the ok feet one as it is only $5 more, and you would know that they would match. Or try and find a kd21c display for sale and leave bike @ 36v.

The 22a KT controller is Julet so needs a 1T4 or 1T5 trunk cable, 1T5 cable has extra light function. Plug the trunk cable in at the controller and the other end has 4 smaller Julets, Green for LCD, Yellow for throttle and either 2 pin red or 3 pin Yellow for brake cut off.

That's fantastic, thank you. I'm pretty sure my Woosh Rio already has at least 1T4 trunk in it, hopefully Tony can confirm if he sees this.

Luckily the bike has been so reliable I've not had to open it up for any reason so have not looked for myself!

no, the Rio has normal long cables with JST connectors, except for the LCD where it has 5-pin 1M extension cable to enable quick swap at the front.
The controller is standard Lishui 6-FET LS768 (LS768 70 5F 17A max) with Hall + JST connectors.

Hi, how did you get on with your proposed 48v upgrade? Was it possible?
