TSDZ2 Spindle/bottom bracket bearings

  • The TSDZ2 replaces the bottom bracket cartridge bearings on the unconverted frame of course, but at what point do you thing the spindle bearings in the TSDZ2 need checking/changing?
  • And of course, where do you get replacements from?
  • As far as I can see from the manual that I have, the drive side bearing is pressed into the main gear wheel (so the old bearing will need pressing out and replaced, or a main gearwheel complete with th bearing can be had for around $30)
  • On the non drive side I am not too clear - the manual mentions a bearing KH2212 - I'm guessing this isthe NDS side spindle bearing? Can anytone confirm please?
  • The only link I've found for someone selling the bearing separately is here but there are no pictures, so I don't know if they are the ones.

  • Thankyou for that link @Sturmey which discusses the changing of the bearing on the drive side (aka the 'sprag clutch'). It does provide good links to Ali Express for replacement parts of varying qualities e.g. CSK30P or BB30-1k-k or BB30-2k-k all of which are sized 30 x 62 x 16mm.
  • It was interesting to note that the OP of that post didn't have the clutch problem until 3,600Km (2,2250 miles ish), so not an immediate concern for me as yet.
  • There's a particularly informative YT clip by 'Mc Elec' here where it is shown how to change the bearing using a combination of heat and cold which would save one having to find a garage to press out the bearing. That's definitely in my bookmarks!
  • But what of the bearing on the non-drive side - the so called HK2212 - does that fail over time - I'm guessing it must do so any further info/links on sorting out that end of the spindle would be useful.

For the sake of simplicity and for this discussion, lets say that there are two type of bike users. The first type has fit strong legs and uses the electric motor to supplement his power. The second type is less fitter and wants the motor to do most of the work. The first fitter type often runs into mechanical problems like the sprag clutch bearings, which mainly carry the riders mechanical pedal power. The second type who rely mainly on the motor, seem to run into problems like the motor/controller overheating. Its interesting that the sprag problems is reported more on the German forum than on most of the other forums. Perhaps they pedal more??

What you never get a sense of is how those reporting problems actually use their bikes. As you say, there's light and heavy motor uses and light and heavy riders, and hot, moderate and cold climates. If only we knew in what circumstances the problems occured, we'd be much the wiser.

In the case of the cracked spindle above and looking at the bike in the YT clip, I'm guessing some off-road stuff was invloved (note the splash guard in front of the motor). What on earth might the rider have been upto to crack a spindle - 120Kg rider doing jumps maybe and bracing on the pedals for landing.

If so, then my poodling to the coffee/cake shop should be trouble free for many a-year :cool: .
