I have a shop in Edinburgh which specialises in electric bikes and prior to Christmas have been taken on as a retailer of Trek Electric bikes. We also sell Giant and Wisper Bikes and looking to take on the new Raleigh Bikes early next year.
The Trek Bikes are well worth a look at with varying levels of both power and regenerative braking and although in the upper price range (£1600 - 1800), I think will prove popular. They also come in varying frame sizes.

I would be interested in your feedback.

The Trek bike looks good, shame I don't have javascript on this browser so can't see much about it.
I'm a fan of Trek bikes and the Bionx system and think these could do well.

More facts a figures would be interesting, i.e. performance, length of guarantee, cost of replacement parts e.g. battery etc.

I can see this bike competing strongly with bikes like the Cytronex range. A pity it only has the PL-250 6.4 amp battery and not the 10 amp PL-250 HT mounted on the bottle carrier.

I assume the Raleigh bikes will be the models produced in Germay by Derby Cycles i.e. identical to Kalkhoff? Raleigh Bikes - Best of britain bikes -
I note that both Kalkhoff and Raleigh are offering a 2 year warranty extension for €300, but only in Germany Austria and Switzerland.

Yes, it will be good to see BionX powered models on our UK market again, their previous appearances have been very spasmodic. It's the only direct drive motor I have much respect for.

The BionX prices have been a killer in the past, but in today's generally inflated market they look far more reasonable.

Following the link you provided there are three Trek retailers in Edinburgh. Where is your shop located? I think your business could take off if you are specialising in electric bikes, servicing and parts.

Am I right in thinking that Giant is the parent company for Trek bikes?

Wishing you the best for 2010.

I'm sure they aren't, both firms are competitors in the US market as elsewhere.

Giant do make some of the lower end frames for Trek as they do for many others, and they have also made complete bikes for many companies in the past, almost certainly including Trek. In the USA many Trek models bear Made in Taiwan labels, Giant based in Taiwan of course.

Trek seem to have taken some of Mark's good ideas built into the Cytronex range regarding the positioning of the bikes, power assisting a decent bike rather than building an electric bike from scratch. As an enthusiastic user of a Cytronex Trek for my 16 mile commute, I should be interested to see how they compare with the Cytronex products. I hope A to B get their hands on one and give it the once over.

Happy new year to all. I enjoy reading the forum even if I don't contribute often.

Hi to all Forum Members and I would like to take this opportunityto wish you a Happy New Year.

Difficult to answer all your questions in the one go, but I will try.

Our website is Electric Cycles and Electric Bikes from the Electric Cycle Company in Edinburgh, Scotland

The Trek Bikes are built on standard proven frames which are used on their
general bike range with the battery built into the rack. This is popular on a number of European bikes where a set af panniers hides the fact they are electric bikes.
The Bionx motor runs silent and with four levels of power from the handlebar mounted controler (and also four levels of regenerative braking which can be set to operate without actually applying the brakes) the distance per charge is down to the individual rider. In addition the controls can be pre-set by the retailer to suit the riders requirements whether you want distance in the flat counties or more climbing power on hills. No manufacturer will quote "real miles per charge" but only for bikes ridden on the flat with riders of a certain weight. We feel that this is fairly useless information and suggest the Trek will get somewhwere in the region of 25-30 miles subject to terrain.
The battery is a bit different from the majority of other manufacturers and is made by Sony having a capacity in the region of 40V6.5Ah (I will confirm exact size in due course)

On the subject of Giant & Trek, there is no connection other than Giant makes frames for other companies including Trek. Giant was founded in Tiawan whereas Trek is American.

The new Raleigh will be manufactured in Germany and has been sold by Raleigh Germany previously and looks very similar to Kalkhoff. There will be initially two models sold in UK with a price in the region of £1700

I will try to provide any other information on request.

Cheers,

Elcycoltd
