Hi,

Does anyone know what training courses / qualifications are available for e-bike mechanics? I can find plenty of courses for cycle mechanics generally, but how about the electrical side? I'm expecting to have a bit of free capital shortly and would like to set up a side business, continuing in a normal job as well unless it really takes off.

Traders; are there qualifications you look for when hiring an e-bike mechanic?

Although you won't get a *cough* certificate, IMO there's no better way to learn ebikes than to "learn by doing". By making a variety of DIY builds, you will gain exposure to as much technology as possible.

Both that and to actively read and post both on here and Endless Sphere as if it were your religion.

Hmmm. General cycle maintenance is simple. Time to make a few bikes start by simple kits, hub and crank offer to help build them for others. Then fixing bikes. A wanted bust bikes for fixing, offers to fix them. You can soon learn and build a reputation, hopefully a good one.

That's pretty much where I am at the moment. Plenty of messing about with unpowered bikes, building and rebuilding. There's not much I can't do / haven't done on an ordinary bike (headsets I don't have the tools for and wheel building I've just started learning) Then I built my own e-bike from a kit. I'm riding that 120 miles a week at the moment. Sometimes it breaks, so I fix it, usually at the side of the road.

I could do more picking bikes up from the tip etc and fixing them up to sell on.

I sort of think I should have a certificate of some kind if I'm going to ask to be paid though. Insurance?

P.S. I was going to say I can't afford to build another one just for the sake of learning (a crank drive, for example), but for the cost of the Cytech training I could buy several kits. Asking for broken ones is a good idea.
