Hi All,

Just thought I would let you know about my 1st visit to Presteigne.

A mate and I took our non ebikes by train to Leominster ( from Newport, Gwent) had a rather nice full English there before riding the 15 miles or so trip to Presteigne.

The weather was a bit miserable but luckily the rain did hold off for most of the time. The rather cold temperature helped us reach the festival without us looking (and smelling) like complete sweaty wrecks!

We paid our £2 entrance fees and once our bikes were locked to a nearby fence we started eyeing up the large array of bikes available.

Anyone who has read any of my earlier posts will remember I recently bought a cheap Cyclamatic folder as an entry into ebiking and I am trying to decide what bike to upgrade to. I have for many months now scoured the various forums for advice and I can honestly say while much of the advice given is probably very good nothing can really replace trying the different bikes out in person. I was quite surprised how much I liked some bikes and disliked others.

That awful GOcycle thing.........Sorry but it might look modern and funky for those with the latest Ugg boots but I did not enjoy the ride one bit....it also sounded like a cat being strangled.

Urban mover......I tried a couple of them but I found them very clunky and unpleasent to ride.

Surprisingly I was not overly impressed with the Whisper 905 sport. It had the more powerful battery and felt fast and comfortable but is it really worth nearly twice the amount of some of the more budget bikes (alien GS2 etc)

I tried a daum electronic ergo_bike Trekking H which at £2500 including sat nav etc was the most expensive bike I rode but I was not impressed.

I must admit I did quite like the Velospeed Lowbury Speedster which at just under £1k with the bigger capacity battery seemed good value for money, It was fast and comfortable but I don't think it would suit anyone over 6ft tall.

The star of the show for both me and my mate were the Cytronex bikes. They looked great, they rode great, they had plenty of power, the owners were very enthusiastic and helpful. If I could afford one I would have bought one on the spot.

Anyway like I said one mans meat is anothers poison so plenty out there will disagree with me and probably for good reasons. I am still undecided as to which bike to buy.....my budget of under £1k is the stumbling block I'm afraid. I have been hanging on for the new Alien Gents special but like others on here I am concerned that no specs or information have been forthcoming from them. If they are on the way over here then surely the bloke knows what they look like and what the specs are. If he's buying blind then I don't think I'd risk them.

Keep biking

I think you`ll find that alien has bikes and spares on route at the moment.

Interesting read about the bikes in general. You know Andy, when I got my first bike from a sports company last year ( a Powertrek Dynamo) for £699 and then found out it was basically a no namer I was a touch down in the mouth and then started to ride it and to be honest although I have been putting money away for something special of maybe £1500 I really can`t imagine anything that would give me a lot more than I am getting from the Powertrek. Just recently learnt from the guy that purchased the Oxygen brand name that my Powertrek came from the same stable and he had been riding one for a couple of years and really loved the bike so maybe I was lucky. Out of interest there is a new range of Oxygen bikes coming out soon that are similar in design to the Oxygens of before but upgraded by this guy with better running gear etc and they are almost certainly going to be of the same ilk as my bike but a couple of generations on and to be honest I just can`t wait to see them and try one.

Hows the folder going BTW? did you ever up the size of the chainring?
