Tongxin motor troubles

As some of you may remember last year I built a lightweight electric bike around the Tongxin motor and lipo nano.

Ive had great fun running it with no real problems. Suddenly today while on a longer than usual run there was a metallic crack from the hub then that was it no power.

The wheel will spin with no load but only very slowly. Is it all over has the hub given up do you think? Any pointers welcome.

Dear Dadplustwominusone,
It sounds pretty terminal. Probably the outer ring has snapped. I think spares are available, but it's not easy to get it apart and back together. Can I suggest that you try a Cute (Ananda) motor, which are also very light and quiet, but much cheaper. They're very similar to a Tongxin apart from the final drive, where they use nylon gears.

Yup - sounds like the outer ring has cracked.

It can be replaced - the trick is finding some that can do the work.

As Dave says sounds like a cracked ring.

Details here on what it takes to fix it/take it apart. Frankly it would be easier to order a new one (see below). Is it still under guarantee ?

When you say nano lipo what battery are you using ?

Also be interested to know what sized wheel you are using ?

I recently managed to source and find a supplier see here

They are responsive and you can buy using paypal. If it is a small wheel and you are happy to order it, I would be prepared to build it for you at cost i.e. cost of spokes and rim. If you do, order two as you will then have a spare :p

Dave are the narrow width Cute motors still available ?

PS. Just found your post. Would be interested to know exactly what you were running voltage wise, controller wise (was it a Tongxin specific controller) and Tongxin RPM wise ?

Given you are are using a larger wheel and don't need a narrow motor, might be worth following up Dave's lead.

I am running it in a 26 inch wheel. I am using Lipo nano Turnigy 4000 mah 5s 18.5v x2 link here. The controller not sure of the make it all came second hand (unused) but it is 15amp I believe.

Thanks I was just wondering if the controller was matched to the motor. Seems about right.

Experience shows that the Tongxins hate being over volted or having high currents pushed through them.

Hardly over volting it if its two Lipo 5s batteries in series. Thats only 37v Nominal and the controller is only 15amp max.
That is providing the motor was originally rated and wound for 36v

Thats only 600 Watt max which the Tongxin should handle without much trouble really.

Agreed, I was just asking what setup he was using to confirm that.

As you say his setup seems fine. I think he is using a higher RPM for the 26" wheel though. Does seem these broken ring failures are a bit of a lottery.

Probably a quality issue rather than a abuse ...
