Tongxin Information

Obviously the exact length needed depends on your rim. I can tell you the approx length of mine when I get home. The chap who built mine into a wheel had no trouble getting them. I didn't ask where he got them from but I know SJS does a wide range of lengths which others have used for electric wheel builds.
My Tongxin-supplied throttles and brake cut-outs appeared identical in operation to those used by other manufacturers. The throttles have battery indicator lights built in.

Thank you. Also, another silly question. It looks like there are 3 types of controller for different modes of operation:

Complete auto.
Semi-auto.
Pedelec only.

I wonder what type are on order? I am guessing and hoping for the fully automatic ones?

Can anyone help explain what this this kit has got over the Alien 36v one?

And how does it compare with the more expensive ones?

The Tongxin motor is IMHO potentially by far the best hub motor on the market because it offers negligible rolling resistance and is extremely small and light - so you almost don't know it is there when it is not operating. A bike with a Tongxin can be ridden pleasurably as a normal bike in a way that a Panasonic powered bike can, but other hub motor powered bikes can not (I did this with my Tongxin for a hundred miles or so at the start of this year)

The drawback is that there have been frequent controller problems and occasional motor problems.

And added to the zero rolling resistance is the fact that it's effectively silent.

These differences are due to a unique roller drive and freewheeling system in place of the internal gears and partially effective freewheel that the other internally geared hubs like the Alien one use.

I am hoping the controller is a more reliable now. I see the Cytronex uses the Tongxin controller and that has been reliable.

Fingers crossed....

But anyway, the TongXin is the only motor I would consider for the positive reasons you have stated, low resistence. I want to ride the bike with a smallish battery under my own power for large parts of my commute and only use the motor when the going gets tough. None of the other hub kits allow me to do that.

so as I'm still waiting for my "dream" e-bike, I could possibly convert my existing manual, which is this

Carrera Gryphon Review - BikeRadar

So if I order the kit, I just need to get my local bike to make up a wheel with the motor built into it ?
Not quite that simple, since the forks will have to be widened by between 10 and 30 mm depending on the motor, and for that bike you need a motor with disc brake mounts. I'm only certain of the eZee motor having a disc brake version, you'd need to check if the Alien has a disc mount model.

I don't think there's a disc brake Tongxin Nano version, but hopefully someone will correct me if that's wrong.

Nice bike but I think you'd have to ditch the disc brake at the front.

I toyed with the idea of converting a Marin Sausalito but I don't think I'd have had the heart to "spoil it"

thanks for the replies. Personal life is a bit busy at the moment, so I'll probably wait for the new cytronex or the infineum

Hi, I am certainly very interested as well. It would be goof to know what you have on order. I have recently tried to order direct but with no luck :(

Hi, tried to send you another PM but your inbox is full.

Can you let me know the delivery costs to mainland UK (Somerset) and how you would like to recieve payment. PayPal works well for me. It will be the 175 rpm I'm after. Also, is it a twist if thumb throttle?

I will not be in a position to hook it up to power for a while as I need to order a battery from Ping so if you can it would be great if you can check it is not DOA. I will get my local bike shop to build it straight into a rim in time for when the battery arrives.

Finally, just to be 100% sure, can you confirm the dimensions needed between the forks. I beleive it is 100mm for the axle and that is fine. What I am after is the width of the motor housing and the diameter. My forks do taper and the dropouts are centered - old fashioned steel forks.

I am in a position to make payment whenever.

Cheers, BM.
