Interesting stuiff on the motocross origins.
Which makes me think about my last 2 motorbikes, they both had bars with the grips at about 40 degrees. Hmmm.

Marcus - thanks. Yes I have been experimenting with the angle of flat part of the grips. By the time my hands sit flat level with my arm, the flat part of the grip is rotated so far towards the vertical that my hands feel like they are going to slide off the bars!

Have you tried the same ride with a pair of gloves? Just wondering if it would make a difference before you invest.

To have the hands, wrist and arm straight isn't the natural relaxed resting position of those joints/alignment.

Might be worth trying a ride without gloves, I once had a pair that gave me tingling fingers.
Dave.
Yep I was just thinking aloud.

Well, I've had this pair of gloves for several years now, and never had the problem on my last bike, so it seems a bit unlikely. Easy to try out though!

peter - ta. I put a Ritchie stem like that on my wife's old bike, so I may nick it and try it out. Will check the on one range rather than just the Marys.
... have just checked, it looks like these are the on-one Geoffs. 45 degree backsweep. 720 wide, which may be a bit too wide for me.

Cheers, John

Hi Mr OFAP,

I have had this problem as well, after a couple of miles hands/fingers tingle and go numb.

At the w/e I was in Halfords(!) and spoke with one of the 'bike' staff about the problem. He rides a road racer type, electric cycle path/gravel type and also a large motorbike.
He had suffered the same problem on all his machines and his cure was taking weight off the hand/wrist by using the core/stomach muscles to help take some of the body 'resting on the hands' weight.

He found this helpfull and to further assist with 'core' strength was doing a number of 'sit ups' daily to increase the time he can ride without the wrist/hand problem.

I can see the logic in what he is doing so will give it a go and see if it helps. I'm just tightening the stomach first and if that helps then I 'may' do a few sit ups to improve things further, my discs permitting!

HTH, I will check in again to see any further tips 'n' tricks for this problem.

Cheers

Stand up straight, drop your hands to your sides and see what position you’re hands sit naturally at. This is the angle most comfortable and should suit the 45 degree handlebars. But vibration causes numbness so being able to change hand positions for me feels better, more comfortable favouring bar ends, 90 degrees over straights at the flat position.

Very interesting. Yes my hands fall into a 45 degree position when I do that. Will bar ends still work if I change to a 45 degree swept back bar?

Sorry John never ridden with swept bars but can expect them to cause less vibratory numbness therefore less need to alternate position.

Standing or sitting it matters not the hands at rest sit at the same angle.

I've got Mary bars and they cured my problem - mostly. I tried bar ends on the bend, but they were too far forward. Tried them on the ends and they are just all wrong.

Hiya...

Ta for this, helpful. I'm thinking Marys without bar ends will probably be better than straight bars with bar ends.
Did you have to fit a longer stem to make up for the back sweep shortening your reach?

Ta v much
