Throttles

Remember that the pre-2016 ebikes that can have a throttle also have to comply with ALL the pre-2016 regs

which mainly means that the motor is limited to 200W rather than the current 250W

When I traded my pre-2016 bike in for a modern one the difference was very noticeable - especially on hills!

now offer this as a service
Just out of interest, as I get asked a lot from the older folks I know, does the Wisper TA throttle, power from standstill or is it PAS activated? I assume it reaches 15.5mph, could this be adjusted (by you or the user?) to say do 10mph if not PAS activated, as most just need that setoff assist from junctions etc.

I have no need for a prebuilt as of yet, so I haven't done any deep diving on the topic but I do like recommend a brand with a CS presence.

Thanks in advance.

Hi!

All Wisper bikes will reach 4mph without pedalling. It’s the “walk along” mode and strictly speaking the rider shoukd not be on the bike when it’s activated!

When we TA the bike so we can open the throttle, it’s from 0 to 15.5mph depending on how open the throttle is. I’ve not been asked whether we can set the max to 10pm before, do you feel it’s likely we may be asked asked for this? It would still need to be TAd, It’s possible of course but we would need to program the bike to only reach 10mph. We could not make it switchable between 10 and 15.5.

There's an oddity in EU law on the S class high speed pedelecs. They can reach 20kph (12mph) legally in the walk assist mode. Since nobody is going to be walking at that speed, using it inevitably means riding on throttle only to that maximum, then continuing pedelec mode to the maximum assist speed of 45 kph (28mph).

Fine in the EU, but here they would also have to be Type Approved if not already certified as S class in manufacture.

Further to the above, it appears some Bosch units can be programmed to only assist to 18 kph (11 mph). This is via a double dongle using one cable set. One dongle doubles the assist to 50kph, the other cuts assist to 18kph.

bike to only reach 10mph
Sorry, I didn't really think that one through, pre-coffee thinking. Yes of course that would limit the bike to 10 mph, I having a feeling someone has asked me a question like that before. I would inform them this is not possible, I doubt anyone would wish the bike to be restricted to 10 mph. I suppose the thinking was, if I can be set to 4mph then this must be programable, obviously this is not the case.

As for 4mph, I have tested this myself, by restricting my throttle to walk and I have concluded it is not a viable solution as it [on my kit] does not provide enough torque to set the bike in motion from a high gear/incline starts etc. Would it be enough on a Wisper?

The 4mph walk along mode is for just that, helping when pushing the bike up a hill for instsance. The power is accordingly quite low so it will give a little bit of a boost but not full power. The full throttle version gives up to full power from setting off, power and therefore speed are regulated from the twist grip.
