First thing..... 500W motor is not road legal. Personally i couldn't care less, but it may, or may not bother you.

The bike the kit is fitted to, the Carrera Vengeance, is currently under £200 at Halfords with discount code..... so you're basically paying £600 to have this kit fitted to it.

1 of the most expensive parts on most bikes is the battery mind.

a new bosch 1 at 500w is 700 quid

I know ;-)
Don't get too excited. It looks like a direct drive motor to me, which means low torque/high speed. Great if you want to go at 25 mph on the flat, rubbish if you want to ride around at a sensible pace, go up hills, or need high torque for any other reason.

Now that sounds like a lot of hassle haha. Not really, sounds like it could be an idea, ask him to get in touch and do all the hard work for me ;-) Point him in my direction if you can, happy to discuss all options and obviously want to get the most of my ( mums ) money.

Like Alan I think it's a D/D hub which are cheap and cheerful at that price because they are generic Chinese ones, the actual lack of a proper rear wheel shot seems to hide that fact. A geared hub motor on a bike would cost a bit more. Don't worry about posting Bagpuss as we would hate to see you buy a pup, generally most Fleabay bikes over 250w with a rear hub will D/D hub. We are here to guide you.

Have a look at the kalhoff Tasman 8 for £849 on flea bay.
It's a top brand with big battery. You would maximise range and fitness on this one. Short range at first and as you get better the range will increase. The £150 under budget will pay your train ticket to pick it up.
