Bike specs here:
Electric Bicycles - Aurora £999

What's so special about this bike? It weight 26.5 kg.
If you consider the motor (Bafang 350W) + controller weight 5 kg.
And the battery 36V10AH Lithium weight 5 kg.

Without the electric part you end up with a heavy bike of 16.5 kg. I believe nowadays you can easily find a much lighter bike.

Any bike which uses a crank drive system. The crank drive is the way it should be, anything else is simply a compromise to cut down manufacturing cost and make assembly simple.

Tillson, what is a crank drive system? Is it something like the Cyclone kit?

A crank drive system is one where the chain is driven as opposed to the wheel directly. This can be achieved by driving the chain wheel/ring by mounting it onto the motor output shaft, or by utilising a motor driven sprocket which in turn drives the chain. There are other variations on this, but these two methods seem to be the most popular.

Usually, the bike frame has to be designed around the motor as it forms part of the chain wheel/ring, pedal and bottom bracket assembly. Bosch, Panasonic, Tanaro, and the new kalkhoff Impulse system are a few examples.

They do have some advantages over hub motors in that a crank motor, because it is driving the chain, can take advantage of the bikes gears.

I like the principle of crank drive bikes. In theory, they seem better, but I have never owned a hub motor bike to compare it against. I also live in a very hilly area which probably suits my choice better.

I did make my initial comment to throw down a bit of bait. This will probably offend some owners of hub motored bikes and I may find myself condemned to eternal damnation and hell-fire.

My recumbent trike with batteries weighs ~16 kg, well will when its new LiPo arrives. :)
A 2 wheeler should be significantly lighter, as a sports style bike a couple of years ago was 9.5 kg and around $500 au plus a light weight hub say 2kg, lipo 1.1 kg so say below 14 kg would be a good weight.

Weight makes a lot of difference on an ebike in acceleration, hill climbing and range. I had a 40 kg electric scooter (low powered) a long time back and 10 kg was the difference between flying up a hill or struggling.
the other biggy is ride ability if the power fails, my trike is a pleasure to pedal still.

I like both crank and geared hub drives, the crank is better at extreme hill climbing say greater than 20%, but I have recently found that a hub IF you can add a reasonable amount of power is maybe more power efficient (same hub similar bike), so my new view is that they are both good but if you throw in off road I think a crank system would have to be better.

Oh and in answer to the OP's question, a light weight recumbent e-trike :)

The answer is eZee:p

Seriously, the answer comes down to personal opinion and preferences, you would never get everyone to agree that one particular bike is the best ever.

The best ebike is hopefully the one each of us own :p

If not, time to get asking on here and find a different one that will become the best ebike.

We had a vote for the best ebike and I don't remember the Aurora getting a mention. Shame, because it is a nice bike for the money. It would be even better if it had proper rear suspension, air forks, a lighter frame, top spec. cycle parts, a bigger battery and a 25amp controller, and there's some already like that, so I don't think it would be fair to call the Aurora the best. However. don't dispair: Do these upgrades, and then you can truly say that you have the best ebike - better than any crank-drive bike. Someone could of course do the same to an Ezee bike. then it would be a hard call.

Of course some of these crank drive ebikes would be much improved by putting a front hub motor on them :p

:(

With a little TLC/new hub I am sure it will be better than ever before.

Also how long/many miles did it give you transport ?

The Aurora's special claim to fame is that it's an illegal bike, well over legal power and speed specifications, making it very appealing to certain users. In fairness to the supplier Alien, they've never tried to pretend it's legal on UK/EU roads and warn purchasers accordingly.

But it cannot be the best e-bike simply because it legally isn't one, it's a light motorcycle. :p

Though liking crank drive overall, I won't go as far as Tillson in saying it's best, since in many terrains the crank drive advantages are unnecessary. Then the simplicity of a hub motor and the advantages of less transmission wear can make it the better choice.

The best ebike is the one you currently own.

The worlds 2nd best ebike is the one you will own next.

FYI the best is probably an S class Swiss Flyer X series, but there are many more contenders.....
