Does anybody know what 'motorbike' is being used in the velodrome for the keirin.
My son says it is electric and as far as I can see it looks like the old french velox?

It isn't electric. The announcer explained it was petrol driven. Plus it has a fuel tank and exhaust pipe. The little motorbike doesn't leave the track until around 45 kph (or so they said) so it's probably a bit of a stretch to use a pedelec - well a legal one anyway!

Exciting bike races eh? (despite the drivel from the comentators).

I'm a little bit surprised that they are still using a petrol driven pace bike, it's not the nicest thing for the competitors to be breathing in exhaust fumes just before their peak need for oxygen uptake.

There are standard e-bikes which can reliably do 45 kph (30mph), the Tidal Force bike for example, and a Bosch unit could easily provide that if the bike is suitably geared.

Given the anti e-bike stance of many cycling organisations and the entrenched attitudes of the UCI, they probably won't want to know though.

Its a Derny bike. The race developed in Japan where bets could be placed on the riders during the race...somehow its remained into 2012! Really they should just sprint for the result over two laps and forget the others as it seems a complete waste of time!...at least Victoria got a gold though!!! :D

I have banged my head against this particular wall for so long it is nice now I have stopped. I think the manufacturer of derny bikes and the riders of such are very friendly with the UCI organisers.

Quite what is the point of this?
Why have a motor cycle to follow?
I think NRG explained it above, on this link

As I understand it, betting took place during the m/c phase on what the riders fitness looked like, a bit like betting on the horses during the parade just before a race.
