Actually, horse dung is often collected by keen gardeners, as they say it is very good for putting on rhubarb. Given a free choice, I have always preferred custard on mine.

As far as I'm concerned; if I'm expected to pick up my dog's crap, then all horse-riders should carry a bucket & scoop as part of their equippage..... And damn well use them.
The difference though is that people would safely use horse dung on their vegetable plot but would you use dog crap? Horses are vegetarian dogs are not.

What infuriates me is on The Silkin Way, a national cycle route through the town park and many of the other cycle routes round about. It's clearly marked in two lanes: one for cyclists and one for dog-walkers/pedestriians, but the dog-walkers, dogs and pestrians don't take any notice of the markings. I wish that the path had a fence to segregate instead.

My other pet hate on shared cycleways is the two women, and it is always women, who have to walk side by side although they can see the path is busy with other walkers and cyclists.
On the one path I use regularly (the short-cut to Waitrose being the closest dash for a sandwich when I've run out of food and missed lunch !) it's usually lovers kissing in the middle of the path. I call it lovers' lane ... Feel a bit of a killjoy stroking my bell in the middle of their passion but they could at least move to a bench or something. But public displays of affection are such a rarity in Britain I haven't the heart to feel aggrieved !

Couldn't agree more. They ride through the village in Devon and have on a couple of occasions had them deposit a huge load right outside the gate onto the lane. It's usually followed by a 20-minute interlude out of one's day hosing it down into the nearest drain. At least all a dog poo requires is a plastic bag ... horse dung means going to the tool shed and finding a shovel or getting out the hosepipe. Unbelievably antisocial !

I looked this up in the highway code and while it specifically states cyclists MUST stay on the cycling part there is no such condition placed on pedestrians to stay on their side.

My god, you men must be unlucky with the general meandering public where you live, everyone who uses my nearest traffic free......Ilminster/Chard... are extremely polite, always move over to let you pass, control their dogs and always say hello/good morning etc.

In fact there is a real 'feel good' factor whilst using it that cheers me up and REDUCES my stress levels ;)

All the horse riders tow kids trailers behind them with bucket, shovel, sacks, water and disinfectant to clean up after their horses .......

....ok ok that bit is a fib....

but thankfully not many horses use the path because I have always been extremely irritated by horse riders being able to get away with not picking up after their 'pets' and us dog owners being persecuted......

A bit like years ago when horses were allowed to travel back and forwards without any quarantine whilst dogs etc were subject to 6 months.......my GOD that infuriated me along with the pathetic excuses used by MAFF to 'explain' it.

But of course, we all know the real reason why racehorses were allowed to gallop unfettered around Europe and the world....and return at will.........dont we......

Heavens, this 'victor meldrew' syndrome is catching isnt it , but hey, I suppose it does us all good to let off steam occasionally :D

As I understand it, keeping a horse is a very expensive business these days, what with feeding, vet`s bills, farriers bills, tack etc. That being the case, horse ownership is the privilege of the well to do. So the very least they could do would be to have the butler follow them with a JCB to clean up the mess.

You would think so but you would be suprised how many low/middle income families have a horse/pony.

Still no excuse for leaving horse muck everywhere.

if you saw the piles of elephant pooh in India you would not complain...also like horse pooh its organic, and harmless..... whereas dog pooh is toxic. So you seriously think a rider should dismount on the road and clear up the pooh, I would like to see the risk assessment for that one......

Reminds me of something that happened in our street several years ago . I was cycling and on approaching home I noticed that a horse had deposited a large pile in the road . Knowing that horse manure was good for roses I quickly ran to get a shovel . There was too much for one shovel so I returned for the remainder and someone had beaten me to it !
Another tale of Residents having eagle eyes or bad intent . It was at the end of the last war or just after it and a lorry deposited some of it`s load of packs of butter on the road and kept driving . People were running out of their houses and within minutes there was nothing left .
Things haven`t changed , as recently a Motorcyclist was knocked off his machine and as he was lying in the road a` good Samaritan ` stepped forward to pick it up for him and promptly rode off on it .
Must be a moral there for us Ebikers , be vigilant if you have a mishap or breakdown .
