Sx2 dongle versus badassebikes Typ3.2

Good morning everyone!

I would like to squeeze a few more mph out of my bosch bike (generation 1 classic line). I've read on the forum of the dongle that requires slight modification to the bike as well as one which doesn't.

Does anyone have any experience of both and could advise me which is better. Is the end result the same? What is the maximum speed you can achieve on the flat? Some sites seem to imply you can reach 30mph, is that realistic or is it more like 22-23mph?

SX2 dongle will double the motor cut off speed, around 32mph.

The maximum speed that you can travel on the flat is down to you, how fit are you? The motor will assist but you'll need to do a good part of the work.

Just remember that the dongle cannot increase the amount of power, just stops the motor cutting out at 15-17mph.

If you have an early Bosch system, you don't need a dongle. You can fool the system by putting a magnet on your pedal and moving the speed sensor to sense the pedal magnet instead of the wheel magnet.

With or without a dongle, your speed depends on your gearing. The dongle doesn't give the motor any more torque. It only changes the speed at which help is cut off. Ultimately you speed on the flat depends on your air resistance or drag coefficient. Assume about 400W of output power. which will get a normal person on an MTB up to about 22mph. If you add 100w by pedalling, 23.mph.

Thanks Gentlemen for the replies.

It is the first Bosch system that I own so fooling it by putting a magnet on the pedal seems like my first port of call.

I'm not looking to go crazy just to get to around 22mph would be good as my commute involves long stretches in open countryside. It gets a bit boring sat at 15mph all the time.

I have a Badass dongle on the Rose.

It adds a useful amount of assistance to 20mph or maybe a bit more.

The motor is still running above that, but by that time a lot (to me) of pedal effort is required on anything but level or declining going.

No experience of the wired in dongle, but I can't see it can't see it doing anything different.

In that respect, the Badass dongle is superior, it really is clip on and go.

I have the baddass dongle for the bosch 2014 bike (that needs a new battery) if anyone wants it (for a small price lol).

I ordered the Badass dongle from the German ebay sight which arrived on Saturday morning. It is really easy to fit and just clips around the existing speed sensor. It took me a while to realise the extra two screws that came with it were to replace the existing one fitted to the bike which has a flat head screw. This is so you can remove the dongle and put it back to factory state really quickly.

I am amazed at the increase in performance, I can easily get 24-25 mph on the flat with little effort. So I am well chuffed! Thanks for yhe advice everyone.

I've got the Badass dongle for offroad use and thoroughly recommend it. Zero hassle, works great, and is a ten second change to go back to road legal. I agree with the previous posts that the level of assist drops sharply over about 20mph.

That's very misleading, the amount of assistance offered is the same all the way to the new cut-off speed, be it x2 or x3, you'll need some seriously high gearing to take full advantage of the x3 one though.

Hi DaveyWavey, I've been using mine on-road and I find I can cruise at 24-25mph with very little effort on my part. I'd like to get to 30mph but I think my legs would give out before I got there, on the level straight anway. I took it off-road too but I find it's a bit too fast as I spend all my time looking out for tree roots!

With a crank motor, each time you change up through the gears, the torque goes down, so in top gear, there's not a lot of torque at the back wheel. How fast you go depends a lot on your aerodynamics, and, to a lesser extent, how hard you pedal. Assuming that maximum output power from the motor is 250w and the rider is sustaining a comfortable 100w, you'd be able to do about 20mph on a MTB. A combined 500w would get you to 23 mph.

do you still have the baddass dongle fitted any problems with it or your bike since fitted i want to put it on my kalkhoff ergo with impulse 2 motor cheers

No problems with the bike or dongle, both of which are still working fine.

Can't help much with the battery query, not least because my dongle has the earlier coin cells.

I think the change was made to CR2 for longer life.

Either way, it's not worth worrying about because the battery lasts at least a couple of years.

2 years plus and mine still going must be near the end of the batt but got a spare.

new ones should last for 5000 miles
