Suzhou Bafang,

what a great little motor,

this is the 36v 250w brushless rear hub, i've had it a week and i love it.

very perky pull-away from stand-still, good fast solid acceleration up to 16mph, whined a little at 7-10 mph but that seems to be quieting down, lot more responsive than the brushed 250w, stronger on hills, virtually no drag - which really improves the pedalling and coasting experience, it really just keeps on going... handy for those long slow cruises to a junction, it's much lighter than the stock chinese hub. very good quality parts, a little tricky to get the right spokes for the 26" wheel. i wanted a Mavic wheel, but ended up buying a superior italian wheel after talking with the mechanic.

on marathon plus, the ride is superb. trying them at 60psi

c'mon everybody, ask me some questions (kid with new toy...)

beeps, giving it the thumbs up

Well done Beeps! Glad to hear it's doing what it should.

Out of interest, which variant of the motor are you using?

And, as it's a nice day, can we see some pictures?

hey.. looks great in the rear wheel...
very "stealthy"

you could be mistaken and thinking its a hub-gear-box
and not a motor

now the controller in a little bag under the seat and the battery in a bottle and nowbody would notice its an ebike...

Hi beeps,

What voltage and what controller are you using?

Nick
Hi Nick,

this is 36v 250w brushless, the controller is one of these:

36V 350W brushless controller for E- bike & scooter on eBay, also Electric Scooters, Scooters, Outdoor Sports, Sporting Goods (end time 02-May-08 19:39:42 BST)

Very nicely done Beeps.

Where do you pick up the model number, 227 SWXB-3, on the Technical Details page ? 8Fun certainly make identification quite difficult.

James
Hi James,

i asked for the spec sheet to check dimensions, the model is only listed there, PM me if you want a copy. 163k .PDF

Hi KB,
tis very small, only the same size as the 34 tooth on the rear cog, the battery would easily go in a standard Topeak rack bag and leave enough room for controller, tools, a couple of bananas and of course your sandwiches....

really, really like the fast take-off,

beeps

i have prepared this weekend my cells for installing in a 900ml bottle..

36Volt, 4200mah, 1,29kg the cells, capable of 54A continouse power and 90A for 15seconds long
in the bottle is even still room to make a balancing-connector inside (also with this cells i would not need)

the only problem is the controller..
i have the front-motor-version
so the controller should be somewere at the front to keep wires short...
maybe i can find some cool, very little bag that i can mount on the handlebar
hmm.. technic of these controllers inside must be stone-age..
i have here a controller from rc-plane with only
52mm x 25mm x 11mm and weights only 34g
nevertheless it can handle 43Volt and 55A continouse, 65A for short periods
(so around 2000Watt continously)
it also as a very cablable processor inside, different modes, charging back to battery, overtemp, overcurrent protection, ...
why the heck are this bike-controllers big like bricks ?)
or - for example - Jive Drehzahlsteller für Bürstenmotoren

A very tidy installation!

It looks pretty much like the back wheel of my Wisper, with the same motor and a megarange freewheel. The motor is so much more discreet than it would be in the front wheel. I think for anyone wanting a kit bike, this is by far the best option available.

How did you get your wheel built up and correctly dished? Did you do it yourself or find a bike shop that could get their head round the hub motor?

yes KB, the controller circuits are very small when you get them out of the case, but i think a lot of the fresh air inside is to help with cooling, but they do seem to be getting smaller, my current controller is only the size of a cigarette packet.

Thanks beeps,

Have you had a look inside? Is it potted, or can you get at the circuit?

Nick

No Nick, i didn't open it, just checked that it worked before i rushed it down to the bike shop building the wheel,

No, i didn't build it myself, the very capable mech at Colchester Cycle Store did that for me, he liked the project because he is also a RC model enthusiast, he has used smaller versions of this hub to power RC cars up to 50 mph, it took him a while to source suitable spokes, but it is a lovely job, perfectly centered. i'm very pleased with it, think he was too.

Are the motors fitted on the Synergies Mistral/Vivace etc Suzhou Bafang? They look very similar. Is there a way to tell?

Yes, I think the Mistral motors (with brushes) are definitely Suzhou Bafang, as they have exactly the same appearance, and numbering style, etc as the front wheel Suzhou Bafang (brushless) supplied by Alien on eBay (one of which I have fitted to my Speed TR).

For wheel building around hub motors I would recommend, from my own experience, SJS cycles of Bridgewater:
