Having not cycled for many years I had forgotten just what a poor state many of our roads are in. It really highlights it on an electric bike with the extra weight. Makes you wonder where all the money paid in the various motoring taxes is being used. Obviously not on maintaining roads

Very true Gray. We were warned though, government attitude was made very clear when the title Road Fund Tax was changed to Vehicle Excise Duty long ago. In fiscal terms a duty is a restrictive imposition and carries with it no entitlement to a corresponding benefit. The VED we pay ranks with tobacco and alcohol duty, with other motoring taxes presumably similarly regarded.

The future for roads maintenance would seem to be in a mix of congestion charges and tolls, given the various sounds coming from central government.

Its OK if you have tyres to keep pumped up! I'm still pumped up waiting for my bike to arrive from China!
