New to the Ebike experience (knee osteoarthritis the reason) and have acquired a Cannondale Canvas Neo 2. Currently it has a 38t chainring. Looking online I see there is a 32t available. Is that the smallest for this motor?

Also is there any reason not to change to a 11-42 cassette from the current 9 speed one with 36t top?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks for the useful info soundwave. Will purchase the 32t chainring. But want to stick to 9 speed for economic reasons. I see that there is a 11-46 Shimano Cues 9 speed cassette, so will go for that.

I come from a background of unassisted cycling with 20/30/42 triple and 11-36. So the changeover to electric cycling in hilly South Wales will take some getting used to:rolleyes:

If you want a lower bottom gear it is better to do the job properly with cassette, derailleur, shifter and chain that are designed to work together than to just swap cassette.

I tried an 11-42 9 speed with one of those funny little derailleur mount extensions and it was crap. Shifting was poor and the non-Shimano cassette was about as hard as bad cheese.

I have ended up with Shimano 11-51 11 speed M5100, shopping around to keep the cost down, which keeps the same top gear but has 40% lower bottom gear. Also, excellent shifting performance that never needs adjustment, unlike the old 9 speed that was fussy as hell.

If I was starting from scratch now I would also consider Shimano Cues, which has wide range cassettes in 9, 10 and 11 speed, and is specifically designed for longer life on mid-drive ebikes.

RRPs are similar, but so far more discounts turn up on M5100.
