I've had crank drives and hub drives, predictably I guess crank drives are quieter (they're usually smaller, less powerful), but oddly the distant hum of a hub drive can grow on one, hard to explain, perhaps same way the white noise of tyre hum and clicking of a freewheel feels part of ordinary cycling?

From the bikes i`ve ridden i would say the latest model Yamaha motor is almost silent,i couldn`t hear it on the Giant road E+.

As Daniel says just above.

Second some of the crank drive units, Panasonic in particular are very quiet

The ultimate for silence for the rider, a direct drive hub motor in the rear wheel with a sine wave controller. Adding a pair of large pannier bags will absorb any slight residual sound.

The nearest commercially, the Sparta / Koga rear DD motor pedelecs.

The GSM is much quieter than the Mxus hub motor but so is the controller except in level 5 where it makes great clacking noises at full Amps . On the flat I can't hear the GSM at all, so much so I have to look at the LCD to see if it is providing power or not!

I don't know whether it's the quietest motor I've heard, but definitely quieter than any crank-drive and quieter than most direct drive motors is the Aikema motor now found on Wispers and (AFAIK) the new Juicy bike. Even with a sinewave controller, the slower commutation of a direct drive motor will always hum, but those little Aikemas, spin very fast, so no hum. They also pack a very big punch for their size because of the high internal speed and low reduction ratio.

The Xion DD motor on my Kalkhoff PC is pretty much noiseless and the little Tongxin motor on my Cannondale is more or less silent too.

Equally, I have ridden Dutch bikes with the Ion-Drive system, (DD) and couldn't discern any significant noise from those either. My early Panasonic motor in a Dutch bike was also silent.

However, most other EAPCs I have ridden, particularly those with geared motors have been very noisy. One of the worst was the GoBike, which I thought sounded like a milk float but it was a surprisingly capable bike.

I did wonder at one point if it was just my diminished hearing causing me to not hear what others perhaps hear so I actually wore my hearing aids one day to compare. Mistake! While hearing aids can actually help a little with failing hearing, what they do really, really well is to amplify every extraneous sound and wind noise had me ripping them out after a few hundred yards!

The message has to be: If you communicate by sign language, buy any bike you want!

Recently rode the new Juicybike roller with aikema motor. Couldn't hear it at all, and quite powerful

If it weren't for the freewheel the Gtech would be nigh on silent, coasting lets it down (might be due to the carbon drive rear sprocket?).

Rear hub is the quietest, because the camera's mic is facing forward on the handlebars. This has become evident to me with my 2 bikes. One front hub and one rear hub.

Front hub. Motor noise is closer to the mic.

Rear hub motor noise is barely audible over the mp3 players music.

Imagining you riding along with a boom box on full volume thinking to yourself "Hey! I can't hear the motor" kind of funny :D
