This plastic disk seems a bit superfluous. I'm thinking it was for protection during shipping. Can I or should I remove it?

Sorry but your friend needs too grow someWhatever you do, don't remove it or you'll invalidate your warranty. That looks like a Cube bike. My friend had one with a Bosch motor that started making horrible noises. He took it back to the dealer, but as soon as they saw that the plastic bit was gone, they told him that they couldn't provide warranty because he'd messed with it.
