We all know what an utter rip off modern razors are. These multi blade cartridges cost a few pence to make, yet sell for a few pounds each...... and how the hell did we get to the point where we need 5 or 6 blades in a single cartridge to shave with !!
In recent years there's been a big resurgence in DE shaving, for the few young uns on here, thats double edge old school blades in an old school razor, like yer granddad used. The blades only cost a few pence each and combine this with old school shaving soap and a brush, which is far better than the gunk out of a can. Its also more environmentally friendly. Some have even gone to cut throat razors.
Proper man shaving...... let that blood flow.

I shaved once with a blade, at 15. I then said to my father, "You must be kidding!", then went out and bought an Arvin electric razor.

I've shaved electric ever since, even through my army years and time on board boats with no mains, using a portable electric razor.

Good that you've found a leccy razor that works for you.
I've gone through loads of leccy shavers trying to find one that works well for me, but none of them come close to a blade for me.
The Philips rotary shavers, while giving quite a close shave, give me terrible razor burn on my neck. The Braun foil shavers i just find hopeless on the neck area and will not pick up the stubble there..... about the best leccy shaver i've used is a Panasonic foil with the ultra fast linear motor and i still use it occasionally. But a wet shave with a blade beats em all for me.

I also use a Panasonic currently..

True an electric will never shave as close, but I see that as a good thing. Most find my 80 year old face skin unbelievable, and that is mainly due to never shaving with blades, which take off the top layer of dead skin scales with the close cut on the hairs.

That layer of dead skin is supposed to be there as any medical scientist will confirm. It is the essential protection against radiation, all forms of solar, and the earth's residual nuclear radiation from the U235 isotope present everywhere in the environment. In many regions it also protects against that same alpha radiation from radon gas emissions.

Check the skin of the shaved area of mature mens faces against the skin elsewhere, such as the forehead, and you'll see what I mean. One is often very blotchy with many coloured speckling, the other pink or tanned and more even, obviously more healthy.

I was partly bearded for the latter third of my working life, basically to be able to avoid the early morning drudge of shaving. But I promised myself I would clean shave in retirement so have been clean shaven for the last 25 years.

I use those Gillette Fusion Pro-Glide blades. They are the five blade type and cost about £3.50 each. I find that a blade will last a month of daily use, so I always change it on the first of the month. So, I'm spending about 12p per day in razor blades.

I don't know much about the double edged single blade traditional type. They seem to cost about 40p per blade, but then we need to know how long they last in order to establish the daily cost.

I never use soap to shave or any soap based product. Instead I use King of Shaves Kinexium oil. That is about £4.50 for 20ml but it lasts a long time. I've used it for years and it works very well, you just need to keep the skin very wet, shaving in the shower is ideal.

Budget pack of Wilkinson twin blade throw away razors only cost a few € cents each bought that way. As I get about a weeks shaving per razor a bag lasts me over six months.

Nah, they're a lot cheaper than 40p each. People generally buy a pack of mixed blades first to find out what blade suits them best, then buy their preferred blade in packs of 100 for anything from £5 to £10.... so 5p to 10p per blade and i can get about 5 to 6 shaves from a blade.
Surprised you get a month outta those Fusion blades, i can only get about 10 shaves, then they feel blunt and get really draggy. Plus the extortionate cost has now stopped me buying them anyway.
I dont really get on with shaving oil either and much prefer shaving soap sticks. I can get Derby traditional Turkish shaving soap for 50p a stick and each stick lasts 6 months..... its better than any canned gel or foam i've ever used and has a great lemony scent.

Of course shaving is so subjective as everyones face & skin is different, that everyone will have their preferred choice.

Nowt wrong with those if you get on with them..... and you aren't being ripped off for those multi blade cartridges either.
I use disposables myself sometimes for quickness and they're handy for travelling.... I like the Bic 2 blade ones and they're only 10p each when on offer.

I think skin becomes conditioned to the type of razor you use. I know if I used a disposable or traditional blade, it would irritate my skin for a while and I'd have lots of small cuts.

Once had a shave from a Turkish barber with an open razor. That was a really good shave. He even tidied up the wispy bits with a flaming methylated spirit splint. Wouldn't like to try doing it to myself though.

I've never had a shave in a barbers...... i even cut my own hair with electric clippers down to a grade 1 every few weeks, so i dont go to barbers at all.
But if i ever go to Turkey again on holiday, i will try a proper barbers shave there.

I do have an old German cut throat razor, wouldn't dare to try it.
Not on me anyway.

I have 2 cut throat razors which belonged to my grandfather - he swore by them, every time he cut himself. I have never dared to use them even before the onset of shaky hands.
