Finding my (electric) wheels

Hi Guys, I’m a new member and resurrecting a Salisbury LPX.

Can anyone tell me where I can get a diagram or blueprint of what components are where on the bike?

I’ve managed to largely get the bike up and running, but I have a power cut out problem that I don’t know where to look. Hope someone can help.

If there is no load on the bike I.e. I lift the back wheel and twist the throttle the bike runs perfectly and doesn’t cut out. As soon as I use the bike I find that either on throttle or peddle assist, the power is there for 3 secs, then cuts out for 3 secs, then power comes back for 3 secs. You can set your watch by this regularity. It’s like the load is causing some overload or thermal problem, or there is a lack of battery delivery power that is being tripped.

Sadly without some sort of idea where components are I can’t even look.

I am hoping that this is a common issue that has been seen before.

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks
Rob

Sounds almost certainly like the battery has had it, probably one or more cells down. An end of life battery can show full voltage on a meter but as soon as a load is applied the voltage collapses.

You can get a new one from Powacycle on this page, but at £358.99, they are expensive for a nominal 26 volt battery.

Alternatively you could get it recelled by Jimmy at:

1A Gateway Mews, Ringway, London N11 2UT

Tel: +44 (0)208 361 1790

Email: https://ebikebatteries.co.uk/recelling/
.

Likely to be much cheaper.

Thanks for your reply and input. I think it probably does stack up as being the battery. I tried Jimmy and although they could help and use copper connections etc it still came out at £250+ It’s too much for me when there could be other things wrong.

So......I’m scrabbling around in eBay instead and found a 24V 10.5mah lipo replacement battery pack that comes with conversion plugs and seems to fit after checking dimensions. That’s £110 for a new unit so i’ll See what happens when I hook it up. Thankfully the unit will arrive Friday by courier as it’s already in the UK.

Cheers

Do please let us know how you get on.
Also, make sure that you get the polarities correct, using a good voltmeter.

That should be ok since they are all 25.9 volts whether specified as 24 or 26 volts. The usually have 7 series cells each 3.7 volts nominal.

Hi
Well the battery turned up a little early which was good and I was very impressed that it came with connectors, instructions 2 sets of keys and an install plate. It charged up fully in about 6 hours. The battery had the usual tester buttons and all the safety features for overcharge, thermal cut out etc. It’s a nice lightweight aluminium housed unit which is great.

well, I managed to install it. It certainly wasn’t a lift and drop which would have been the case if I had paid the £358 that Powacycle wanted - mine was just £109 including DPD Delivery!

the battery itself was a little tight to fit through the frame. In other words needing some grease and waggling and just managed to fit into the plastic holder albeit with some plastic straining. For the electrics, I had the bright idea of taking out the connector from the old case and wiring that to the new battery’s converter plug and that was very slick.

I was then ready for the test. Fingers crossed. Bingo! Straight up the driveway slope with the twist throttle. Had a whizz up and down the road with no cutouts! Deep joy!
I decided to do a hill test. There is a steep long hill near where i live and on peddle assist it took me from the bottom to the top easy as pie. The old battery has never managed that without cutting out so I am delighted.

the only challenge left is to better insulate and protect the wiring against rain and water ingress because it doesn’t fit the sleeve properly. I’ll probably pack with some polystyrene hard foam and make some sort of rubber skirt to go around it. I thought silica gel might also be an option in places but still chewing over the best way to do this.
All in all I’m very happy. £109 was a gamble from eBay really but it’s paid off for me. Battery is better than the original albeit tech has moved on quite a bit since I got the bike 8 years ago.
cheers all and thanks for the advice on the battery. It was spot on. ill upload a photo of how it is now

I used to have one of these - I loved it but sold it last year and replaced it with a more modern ebike

However I did manage to get some wiring diagrams while I had it - I will attach them so you have them if they come in useful - and for others

A clear or neutral coloured sealant may be helpful, I use one that I buy off ebay quite cheaply that also glues things together (bathroom sealant does not stick to some things!), as well as sealing. And its also heat resistant!
Its number 705 and is very cheap, with a slow delivery from China....
Remember to clean all surfaces with meths, and not to touch such areas with your fingers. I use throwaway rubber gloves for handling.
Its really excellent stuff. The tube is a bit larger than a big toothpaste tube.
And it sets really slowly, at least overnight is needed. Longer is better.
I expect you can also find it on ebay UK, where the text might be more readable!
Regards
Andy

There are quite a few on eBay and my seller was dailydeals2018. However they are not currently selling. Not sure if that’s because of corona.
Mine was a 10AH 24V and the performance has been outstanding. Better than the original I would say. I’ve managed to tow my 7 yr old daughter up a steep 1 in 4 hill with just usual peddling! It lasts a good week of solid daily use too so I’m very happy.
was a bit of a fudge to get it installed in the original space but other than that was easy to connect.

mos thanks to the guy that posted the diagrams - very helpful
