I use both an electrified Brommie and a Sahel Compact regularly (commuting and leisure). The road surfaces round here are terrible and in the wet I don't feel safe on the Brommie even after fitting the best Schwalbe Marathon tyres. In contrast, the Compact feels absolutely sure-footed and the big tyres really do soak up the bumps. I love both but for everyday use it would have to be the Compact. I've also been on 50+ mile rides on both and depending on the surface, they both are decent enough bikes for comfortable touring.

I find the Topeak trunk bags go very well with the look of the Compact and this lock http://www.millets.co.uk/cycling/027094-masterlock-street-fortum-d-lock-and-cable.html/727472/&cm_mmc=googleshop-_-shopping-_-feed-_-all?gclid=CLjKk8vDob4CFRQctAodICUADQ fits neatly in the bottom of the bag.

There are lots of pictures of the Sahel Compact with and without this trunk bag fitted on our website. http://www.bikehigher.co.uk/hire/gallery

Thank you for such a detailed reply. And thanks for the bag recommendation. I'll definitely be getting that to go with my bike :) I've decided that it's probably best to go for the compact. Hopefully I'll place my order in the next couple of weeks. Just one question now... Black or orange... :)

For me the orange looks more eye-catching. The colour on the 50Cycles website makes it look redder than it is. This was a picture I took at the NEC cycle show.

If you go for the Topeak trunkbag, just be aware that there are two methods of fixing them to your bike - the MTX range require a specific rack to secure it to the bike, whilst the MTS will strap onto (almost) any rack. There is also an RX series - basically the same as MTX, but for smaller bags and loads (I think!)
I would recommend going for one of the MTX system bags, the strap on design of the MTS is a faff, and the bag can move about whilst riding. The MTX fit onto a purpose made track - they are quick to attach to and release from, as well as being a solid attachment. But of course, you need the rack too = more expense.
