Hi! I'm Paul and I recently retired from a lifelong career in Mechanical Engineering, metrology being my forte. Recently purchased a Gtech ebike and love cycling around my part of Dorset.
A policeman stopped me many years ago in Teddington saying I’d been driving at 47 mph on a 40 mph limit stretch of road. I had literally just completed my uncertainty of measurement course at NPL so had some fun with him. I looked at his bit of kit and politely asked about its calibrated range and results, annual drift, thermal effects, reference standard used etc. He gave up when I got to the part about 95% confidence level and told me to go on my way.We need someone that knows about metrology here, so a warm welcome to you. Lots of rubbish written here about what people see on their voltmeters, LCDs, speed measuring devices, etc. Even the police are seizing bikes based on their measurements or observations without understanding even the basics of metrology.
It's also a problem in medicine, where doctors prescribe medication or other action based on a single measurement result that's written in front of them. Personally, I was prescribed a drug to be taken for the rest of my life based on one measurement. I refused and asked them to take another measurement, which showed I didn't need to take the drugs.
Come in, the water’s lovely!!Welcome - although I did a mechanical engineering degree, and then went onto British Aerospace I got diverted into Computer Systems (and now counting down to retirement !)
Cloudy with sunny periods.Welcome, any thoughts for Bristol next Thursday 23rd?
