Hello,

I have a disabled friend who has a broken throttle on his Powabyke MK1. He relies on his bike to get to the shops and is beside himself without his bike working.

Does anyone who of a replacement throttle he could use? He says he's tried all of the one on eBay and none of them are compatable with his controller, which I assume to be the standard MK1 controller.

Yours hopefully,

Adam

I suspect that original throttles may still be available . Member Frank Curran who works for Powabyke should be able to tell us. I suspect that pretty well any throttle that will fit on the handlebar will do the job, but wiring colours may be different. Sussing the wiring out is a job for a guy with a multimeter and the knowledge of how to use it. What is your location, maybe a local member could help.

Powabike have them, I changed one for a customer last summer. I dont think its a Hall effect throttle as they have brushed motors so the cheaper ones should do. But saves messing around getting the right part.

Does anyone know how a non Hall Effect throttle works ? Is it just a "pot" , [variable resistor]?
Yes and I think they are just used on brushed motors, When I have the time will tell you as I intend fitting a 3 speed switch to my Izip

Potentiometers can be used as throttles on brushless as well as brush motors, it's just a matter of applying a progressive 0 volts to 5 volts DC signal. Some switched power level handlebar controls do the same using a chain of fixed resistors, the eZee EAF (Easy Assist Factor) control, for example.

Those six wire throttles used on early Powabykes are a bit of a pain. TNC Scooters in Jackson - Tennessee stock them, but the pin-outs would need to be rearranged. My understanding of the sixth wire is, It provides a secondary ground return path for the low-level diagnostics to function. When the battery voltage drops below LVC threshold, the primary ground return path shared by the hall sensor and the battery level LED's goes 'open'. The secondary ground return path closes and allows the last LED to flash on and off. This is the diagnostics indicating the electrical system is fine but the battery needs charging....but I could be wrong about this!

Thanks for Frank's contact details and the info regarding compatable throttles.

Hopefully it will have helped get someone back on the road who desperately needs to.

Good work, many thanks,

Adam

Hi Adam,

Powabyke have been trying to source these throttles now for 4-5 months without success. I personally have rewired ALL of our current throttles on a test rig to see if our latest throttles can be adapted again without success. The problem is that on our MK1 range of bikes the throttles work in reverse to the later models (post 2005ish). So our new throttle will operate your bike at full power when the throttle is closed and all power will be cut when the throttle is wide open. Obviously this is dangerous especially for less able users. We are continuing to try and source these so keep an eye on this thread and the Powabyke Facebook page Powabyke Electric Bikes | Facebook where any update will be published. If you drop me an email at fcurran@powabyke.com with your details, then I can contact you when they are in.

Kind Regards

FrankC
