Has anyone tried it? Better or not as good as a rearview mirror?


Maybe worth having one as I'm tired of having to turn so much my head to check for cars behind me.

Yes, it's one of those thread, and I will probably get a trolley later and I'm also thinking about getting rear view.

I think the rear view mirror is a bit big and not that well placed on bike. I was wondering if it would make sense and if anyone tried this gadget!

Rear view mirrors are much better, these electronic screens suffer from being ineffective under many lighting conditions like direct sunlight.

Have you noticed how premium cars using their built in internal satellite screen as a reversing view still use ordinary side mirrors externally? They could easily have electronic rear view screens externally at their premium prices but don't, simply because they are not good enough.

A rear view device that doesn't give a view at critical moments is dangerous.

I use a PSP games console with a USB camera on the end of a cable extension. In some conditions it is very very good. But as Flecc says it is "ineffective under many lighting conditions like direct sunlight" ...however, I still use it and will one day solve the lighting problem. But, be warned, it will involved tent poles and plastic bottles arranged to provide what I am looking forward to calling "the hood".

Well I for one (and a newbie to this site) do not think its a crazy idea, you can get cameras so much smaller, fit under the seat no problem, the clouds will help give you a better contrast to the screen, we get lots of those, daily drive is a Tesla and I don't look at the mirrors just the screen... but then I don't expect anything to keep up I'm off now, googling 12v 17" screens.....

My Peugeot Partner has a rear view camera instead of a mirror. It's not very good at night, nor when it rains. I don't believe these things would work on a bike because the sunlight makes it difficult to see the screen. Even with my fantastic amoled screen on my Samsung phone, I have stand in the shade of a tree to see maps, etc.

You'll probably have better success with these - a lot cheaper too.

If I was going to though tech at this issue (I wouldn't BTW, the mirror is king herre) I'd have thought a small camera under the saddle linked to smartphone would better. Fewer wires, far superior screens as a general rule which will auto adapt to lighting conditions (insofar as is possible)

any cheap action cam will have a app for a mobile phone to view it on via wifi but fps will be way low due to the connection but will vary how much you spend on both phone and camera.

I am not a Luddite, I enjoy using tech, but having lost the bluetooth controller battle I prefer simpler tried and true solutions like rear view mirrors.

A camera would work on a recumbent - trike, vélomobile, ... - because you can use a sun shield to shade the screen. Also the screen would be far enough away to not need reading glasses to see the damn thing... That is very hard to do on the handlebars, usually I have to take a hand off the grips to provide shade when I need to see Oruxmaps. Reading is a whole other issue especially through the waterproof phone holder protection.

Would the camera miss areas you can see with a mirror or by just turning your head?

A camera rear view would also require a second screen because picture in picture on the GPS screen would not be readable at all. That would make a very crowded looking handle bar.

The wired Motorcycle video camera screen is terrible when it comes to sun/light glare so a mirror or look over the shoulder is a far better solution, the advantages are it's recording capabilities and the use of very tiny mounted front and rear camera which record footage. A 12v/3s battery is needed for power, as AK has mentioned more clutter for the bars.
