Raleigh Motus Grand Tour V Gazelle Ultimate T10

To think - I thought I might get a second hand for about £700
I have now had an amazing 2 weeks trying everything near by!!

I like a step through, crank driven bike.
I am not sure about the battery position on the Gazelle ( otherwise it is very comfortable)

Today there are two bikes I liked and today for the first time I tried a performance motor and I loved Nyon.

So....
what do you clever and knowledgeable people think of...

I prefer the battery position on the Raleigh and that it is cheaper but if you have test ridden them then the one you liked best is probably the one to go for.

it is cheaper but the other bike - the gazelle - has the more powerful motor and the longer lasting battery and the nyon system.... so hard to choose

Check again the cost of the gazelle with the 500 whr .. reading your link it seems an additional 170 on top of the 2999.
I do believe that the Motus motor is strong enough... But it's your call.
If you get the Gazelle, you will be wondering why you did not hold out for a .... At 3500 and if not that the ...... At 4000. Etc.

The Gazzelle is road bike only, once you leave tarmac you will find limits of its little mono shock very quickly.

Motus will be more capable on unsealed surfaces. If considering Motus also look at Cube Touring Hybrid Pro 500 2019 £2400. Still Plus motor but it comes with air fork (better in rough) and wider gear range (lower climbing gear for those seriously steep hills). Choice of frame styles.

Nylon is easy enough to add later, may find you don't need it. Depends if you like looking at countryside or electronic display. I switched Purion as it wasn't as distracting.

stop worrying about hills at your weight.
any e-bike, even those cheap bikes that you find in French supermarkets for 700 euros or TV shopping channels will flatten them.
Both of the bikes above are overpriced especially the Gazelle.

Go Gazelle. My Raleigh Motus Grand Tour developed a fault after 150 miles. The store I purchased it from told me to fix it myself, and offered to sell me the very expensive tools!

My local raleigh dealer tried 3 times to fix it but couldn't as they don't have the skills required. They are not ebike specialists.

Raleigh won't accept any responsibility - my contract is withe the seller. Not them. They stress this strongly.

The bike is now awful to ride and possibly dangerous. It will leave me stranded at best, injure me or someone else at worse. Further advice from Raleigh? Don't ride it.


So, think very carefully before you part with your money. It is easy to sell these bikes - they are great fun - but be aware that once it's yours, you are on your own. You need to work out how you are going to independently maintain it and fix it.


With Raleigh, there is no centralised customer support, no guarantee that the local Raleigh dealer has any experience on ebikes or even that they will look at it for you (they don't have to, their role is only to sell new ones), and if you approach Raleigh you'll find them uninterested in anything other than sales.


In reality, the Raleigh brand counts for absolutely nothing. Believe it means quality, reliability and honesty and you're in for a surprise. You will get better customer service and attention from a chinese or eastern European firm.


Really, (and I know you can tell I've been let down!) my advice is careflly think it through. These ebikes are expensive machines and sales have far outstripped any reasonable access to mechanical support or even basic knowledge from the LBS.

When they go wrong, and like all bikes they will, how will you deal with it? Because you'll be on your own and unless you are going to learn how to maintain the electric components yourself, or maybe if you live next door to an ebike shop, you'll soon just have an expensive welly rack. I am now back on the dock-yard treader I found on a tip 5 years ago, the motus is rusting in the garden. Don't make the same mistake as me.

Did you ask on this forum for some help in trying to fix it? I probably wouldn't be able to help you, but there are some real smart cookies using this site who almost certainly would be able to.

This sounds very strange, if your bike is unfit for the purpose for which it is sold, you should easily get your money back. You would not have spent over £2000 for it to rust away.

I love my Motus Grand Tour which now has over 400 fault free miles. One of my customers has completed over 3000s miles on his 2015 Motus and the only issue he's had is with the kick stand!
