Here is some info on the Raleigh clones of the Kalkhoff Agutta available on the German market, or is it vice versa?
  • RALEIGH Leicester E 7G Model aprox. £1289 (same as 7 speed Kalkhoff Agutta)
  • RALEIGH Leicester E de luxe 8G Pedelec Model approx £1432 (Deluxe 8 speed version of Kalkhoff Agutta)
  • RALEIGH Dover E 8G Pedelec Model approx £1575 (Gents 8 speed version of Kalkhoff Agutta)

Only a fraction below the full price of the Kalkhoff here though, and the costs of getting one here would increase that quite a bit, whatever method was chosen.

I'd still rather have the support of a UK spares source. 50cycles have come in for some criticism of late, but I've always found their efforts to keep spares in for the bikes they supply to be very good, not just the expected stuff, but also the oddball items that wouldn't be expected to fail.

Leicester LE4, UK.
Are you sure these bikes really are the same? Close comparison of the pictures shows some minor differences in the front forks and brakes and Radwelt-Scherer quote the gewicht (weight) of the Leicester E as 24.9Kg, a good 4kg heavier than the Kalkhoff Agattu.

While they are obviously both based on the same design diferent buyers may well call for different specs from the manufacturer, which may or may not be Kalkhoff but certainly isn't Raleigh.

Actually there are at least three different brands (all of them should be part of the Derby Cycles Group) selling the same bike in Germany at the moment: Raleigh, Kalkhoff and Simplex. Quite confusing for German customers I suppose! But Kalkhoff appears to be the only one selling the bike outside Germany.

A reason to believe it is a good pedelec is that, as an answer, the technically similar Biketech Flyer is reducing its prices in all European countries.

And making exclusive national deals like the one with 50cycles, who have an ambition to bring this sort of bike into the UK at permanently lower prices than in the recent past.

I'm finding the speculation of some about bringing Raleigh versions in direct as quite amusing. Look at the Gazelle at over £1500 with the lower power motor, smaller battery, shorter range, very much heavier, and the BikeTech at nearer £2000 for the higher powered version, and you see how good the Kalkhoff full price here is. At the special offer price that's current the order book should be overflowing. The badge engineered Raleigh wouldn't compete even if it were allowed to be commercially imported, which it won't be.

And as Leonardo says, every indication is that the Kalkhoff is good anyway. Just look at the content. The known and proven Panasonic motor system in it's latest, fast and long range version, an already well proven lithium battery source, Shimano's long proven seven speed hub gear and hub dynamo, Busch and Muller lighting, Pletscher stand, and the highly praised Continental puncture resistant tyres.

The biggest difficulty the designers would face is in making it a bad bike, that would be an achievement.

Oh God! My credit card is twitching and my palms are getting sweaty! To buy or an Agutta or not to buy that is the question?
Think I might just flip a coin, or do I cross my legs until Flecc posts a report:eek:

I'll hopefully be able to beat the price deadline with a report in time John.
