qwic mn380 bafang engine tuning

i bought a serial to usb convertor cable for the bafang engine, in orider to finetune the settings.
Now i found the this qwic mn380 has a plastic cover over the engine, where i assume the connector is hidden behind.

I also assume its not possible to remove that cover before removing the crank?

theres no connection on the controller unit, i opened it, is has a serial connection inside, but thats not accesible from the outside without soldering

On the MaxDrive 400, I'm pretty sure you disconnect your display at the in-line connector near the headtube and plug the programming lead in there. If the connector isn't obvious/visible, it may be pushed into the downtube a little, so you may need to pull the display cable back to access it.

A number of members on this forum have bikes with Bafang 400 mid-drives (as do I); many have used the programming cable to modify their settings. There's a wiring loom running from the motor up the downtube. There're connectors inside at the top for brake-cutouts and/or gearsensor and the display. If any connectors aren't used they're left tucked inside at the top of the downtube. The display connector on my own M400 is outside the downtube and easily accessible - it just needs to be pulled apart to connect the programming cable to it.

Different e-bike, different Bafang mid-drive motor (and thus settings he uses), but the programming cable and connection point is the same for all Bafang mid-drives:

It's hard to say. The current model Qwic MN380 uses a Brose motor, but there are pictures of the current (similar I think) Qwic MN8 model that uses the Bafang M400 motor as yours. That MN8 uses the standard Bafang DPC07 display (same as my own display). It may be that Qwic paid Bafang to put non-standard extra-long cables onto a standard Bafang display (they certainly paid to have their own branding applied) so they could hide that connector? In the few publicity shots of the MN8 I see, there do seem to be cables - maybe the connector also - tied up under the display?

It seems strange. Higher/more costly premium brands don't go to such lengths to hide a slightly bulgy connector: All the Bafang mid-motors and displays are kept deliberately simple, interchangeable, plug and play with standard length cables.

I think you may need to ask Qwic if you can't find it?

In the display I can find the serial connections soldered to the display, but since it's a fairly new bike, I will not work on that

No, the cables that go to the display are soldered directly to the board

It would be very, very unusual to have a cable soldered directly to the display that was long enough to run all the way through the frame and then plug directly into the controller board in the motor. As you say, you can't find a socket there anyway.

If it is as it appears a standard Bafang M400 motor and DPC07 display, Qwic would need to have gone to extreme lengths just to deliberately muck-up a well-proven, simple, plug-and-play installation system which every other e-bike maker sees fit to use straight out of the box.

There has to be an in-line cable connector somewhere with a plug small enough to fit through / is no bigger than the hole in your downtube - your picture in post #6. How else would they be able to wire the bike?

Maybe remove the motor housing and unplug the connector from the controller that runs the wiring up the downtube to offer some slack, remove that plastic bung/grommet at the top of the downtube, and pull the cabling back through a little further?

i removed the plastc, i pulled a little harder, the cable came out around 30 cm extra, but no connector.
When i shake the cable i can hear something hitting the downtube from inside, i guess thats the connector.
But i cannot pull it out any further.

removing the motor housing is not possible without removing the crank.
Guess i will try that. Maybe the connector is accessible from there

This may help: The DPC07 display is available with 2 cable length options - 230mm or 850mm. You could measure to determine where the connector is likely to be and decide from which end of the downtube you could pull the cable through to access it - if that's what you still want to do.

On my M400/DPC07, even the longer 850mm lead would only reach as far as the lower part of the downtube - it still wouldn't reach the motor housing. IIRC, the display lead still needs to then connect to a combined wiring loom from which the various other connectors are then split, before connecting to the controller in the motor. Usually, that happens at the top-end of the downtube, but in your case it seems more probable it's at the lower end?

On my own e-bike - if it had an 850mm long display cable (which it doesn't) - I'd need to remove the display to feed extra cable through to access the connector from the motor housing, and that assumes there's space to pull the loom/connectors through without dropping the motor out.

Sounds like the connector is in the lower section of the frame tube, so you will most likely need to unbolt the motor from the frame to gain access to it.
