If your battery is healthy you don't need bms. I have been using my 18650pf battery for 6 months now and didn't have to balance it yet....

And I use them everyday and full cycle is done every 2 days

An illuminating interview with Justin Lemire-Elmore of Grin Technologies, Vancouver, CA. who says that battery life can be SIGNIFICANTLY increased if they are only charged to 80 per cent, with a full charge every few weeks for the purposes of cell balancing.

at about 19 minutes in.

According to him this is how Tesla can offer up to eight years life on their car batteries, which are simply massive arrays of the same 18650 cells used in bike packs.

Grin Technologies offer what looks like the Rolls Royce of chargers called the Cycle Satiator, which can be programmed to do just this.

If anyone has information on whether this device would work with a Haibike Yamaha battery, and how to connect it, I would be very pleased to know.

I emailed Justin who thought it MAY work, but that there may be other factors built into the Yamaha pack that could cause difficulties.

NiMh and lithium batteries in satellites have for many years had a ten year 100% reliable life with daily charging. Their secret is that they are rated at seven times what is needed to cover their dark phase out of sunlight.

So each 24 hours they use just one seventh of their capacity in the dark phase and are fully topped back up when back in the light. It's just another way to get long life. Basically all that is necessary is to have a far bigger battery than what is the minimum needed. This is where e-bikes fall down, for weight and size reasons they have batteries only just big enough so they often have to be worked too hard for long life.

The Satiator is good piece of kit, we use one in the workshop, but as you will be aware they are not cheap.

You will probably need an adapter as the standard Satiator comes with a female XLR connector, but they also have an RCA adapter available. It's very important that you have the polarity correct.

I can't guarantee it will work with a Yamaha battery.

I, personally, have had very, very few problems with ebike batteries across the lines I deal with. In fact, one one battery out of all of them all did have a cell issue. This was dealt with very quickly by the supplier to the satisfaction of all.

Most problems stem from customers not understanding how their system works. An example would be the battery charge indicator lights going out under load and the customer thinking that there was something wrong or that the battery was prematurely flat. Another big problem is charging too often.

Dealers, backed by name brand suppliers, are your best bet for trouble free battery life. Buying from the internet from lord knows who is a mine field.
