You think this is fun? We have collected a year's worth of batteries that need to go back to the EU based manufacturer for replacement or repair. So we need to export them, then re-import, not forgetting that we have already paid for the batteries so there is no value. This really is complete and utter nightmare.

Mind boggling, but I have to say I'm not surprised since it was always apparent the Brexiters had no idea what leaving the EU entailed.

I might try to make an ebike batttery using 18650s pulled out of Poundland power banks


If you don't mind my asking, how does a business like yours calculate price increases for your products, as a result of all this extra nightmarish crimson tape?

We ship our bikes into the UK from our facility in Portugal. DHL have added €18.00 per bike to handle the paperwork their end and we have had to employ a new accounts based lady to look after it on our side. It also looks probable that we will need to pay another 6% duty as the bikes move from Europe to UK, bear in mind that we have already paid 6% duty as the Asian parts arrive in Portugal. All our prices will rise by 7.5% next week to compensate.

Instead of happily developing, building and marketing bikes we now all need to be customs experts, this is no mean task.

I suppose that is the result of rule of origin.
Your previous 6% duty was paid to the EU.
Surely your company in Portugal shouldn't have to pay EU duty on the batteries a second time when the batteries re-enter the EU as they come from there?

The paperwork to avoid this is another bundle of red tape to wade through I am afraid. This is now proven to be the disaster that we all knew it would be.

You are right, it used to be much easier dealing with our friends in the EU than the rest of the world, now, the EU too is going to be a complete nightmare.

Unfortunately as always it will be eBike riders that will pick up the bill. This can't be what we all wanted?

The ebike market is going to be huge for the next few years regardless, demand is at an all time high. I doubt that 7.5% price increases will put buyers off. But what's really needed are very small, enclosed, lightweight 250w folding cars which people can use without needing a driving licence, capable of fitting into the luggage racks of trains... but that might be just me.

It's a shame that some grown adults can't have a factual discussion without making derogatory remarks about those that have a different political view to their own.

I voted remain for many reasons, but calling those who voted the other way "closed mind deniers" is not only insulting, but is exactly the type of rhetoric that pushed many middle-ground waverers to vote out.

What should have been an informative thread about the challenges that have arisen has been devalued by people who have so little self control that 4 years on they're still sniping unpleasant remarks at people who have done nothing more than express a different view to their own. Very sad.

Many years ago I had a bad back problem caused by some building work I did with my father, I went to see a doctor and after an examination he pronounced me fit & well and nothing wrong me.
My written reply to him was that he was "mistaken" no insults or comments about his judgment only that he was mistaken. The people who voted to leave the EU were to my mind mistaken in their belief it would make for a better UK, they are not stupid they just got it wrong and time will prove that to be the case I believe.

not necessary. For trade, customs union (like Turkey is inside EU customs union) is enough for goods to move cost effectively. Theresa May got that but her deal did not pass.

Exactly David, and I keep hearing the word 'sovereignty' bantered about like people think it means something these days (Boris I'm looking at you!)

I personally think the world works better, when there is a collective mindset on everyday global issues. The issue highlighted in this thread will cause some individuals great hardship. The small businesses that go under due to the import/export fiasco. The casual eBay or Amazon seller, who sells globally to earn a few pennies to supplement low wages.
The worker that relies on their electric bike to commute, but is waiting for weeks for spare parts to come from Europe.

Detaching ourselves from the EU will just alienate England from Europe. I say England, because I forsee at some stage, Scotland and Wales will become independant. The Republic of Ireland already is, and you might as well say Northern Ireland is too.

As with your comments, mine are just my opinion and hopefully don't offend anyone. But after living and working in Germany for 16 years and liaising with many nations as part of my job, I see no value in sovereignty.

Perhaps you need to open your mind and read the opening pages of the thread I linked to. There you will see the closed mind denial of apolitical factual information I'd posted which gave its name to to this thread.

I'm very happy for others to have a different political opinion, as I've posted before I've voted across party lines all my life according to circumstances, but your posted dislike of my above factual comment is your attempt to suppress my opinion of unjustifiable comments under the guise of good manners.
