Dillenger apparently had a load of bikes shipped over, which had paintwork spoiled due to the bikes being held up at customs for so long.

paintwork was damaged inside the cartons which are inside the container?

strange explanation. So what would happen if the bikes are exposed to sunlight?

Bear in mind that the controller BMS should prevent the battery from being run flat.

There are very different grades/types of SLA but running them down low is a life shortening experience for them.
Lithium tends to have most of its AH avalable without significant affect on its lifespan but SLA can easily develop a number of life limiting changes even after one deep discharge cycle.
Do SLA,s have BMs's?

Sounds like they were very poorly finished in manufacture and have suffered further from that since. Painting over oxidisation could have been the start of the problem.
