However fast the bike was, I bet that beer can was empty before Sergeant Nevill reached the miscreant! :)

Seriously though, with the economic pressures currently on the police, e-bikes must have more potential for them in saving money over car use than at any previous time.

flecc;117567 Seriously though said:
Just as important is that it increases police visibility to the public. A cop on a bike still seems 'on the beat' unlike in a car where they seem always to be in transit to somewhere you are not.

Whether the cop on the beat has any real crime prevention effect is a moot point, of course but perception is that it does and that's what counts.

Must be quite a battery on those bikes to give a 56 mile range - or perhaps it means with pedal assistance?

Hi Lemmy

The new 592Wh batteries are quite something but unless the bobbie weighed about 8 stones he would certainly have to pedal too!

The police in the City of London are using our bikes too and they say they are the fastest way to get about in the square mile.

All the best

There alot of police on bikes in Birmingham but none on electric. Would be good tomsee
But Birmingham is tiny compared to London so does require the assistance.

Hi Scarrabri, thanks for your kind comments.

Hailsham is a small town in Surrey, much smaller than Birmingham, we do have quite a lot of bikes on trials in various constabularies up and down the country (and in Scotland and Wales). Surrey Police are one of the first to start using them in earnest, we expect to see a lot more on the streets over the next few months.

All the best

Hailsham is a small town in Surrey,
I was brought up in Tunbridge Wells ( on a council estate in case anyone might think I'm related to Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells :)) and often used to cycle and motor-cycle to Hailsham, Eastbourne, Hastings and so on with my mates at weekends.

The only Hailsham I know is in East Sussex, a long way from Surrey......

Oooops,
Tired and emotional,

Dear Sir
I am appalled that such a mistake should be made on a public forum. When I was in the army we used to have men shot for less. Such mistakes are treason in my opinion. In my day, we had to learn the location of every town and village in the world off by heart and any error was met by a damn good thrashing.
I remember once saying to one of my men that Hartlepool was in Devon. He reported me to the MOD who had me demoted to corporal and put in solitary confinement for 3 years, no food, no water. It taught me a lesson, I can tell you,

Yes indeed fantastic news as the police need some exercise anyway especially with the nice weather coming up in our lovely uk winters. Get them out there on the streets on electric bikes and ban them from parking up there vans and cars and taking over kebab shops and and eating themselves into obesity. Don't they have a minimum fitness test for police these days? absolutely ridiculous. Where would they carry all there specialist equipment? i.e. a speed camera, lol. Im souping up my next bike to around 1000 watt motor and around 72volts and I'm going looking for the nearest speed camera
