Correct. The retailers cannot really give you information on de-restricting their bikes because of legal liabilities, but if you have a look on the Woosh kit and Sirocco CD review threads, there's info on how to adjust the speed limit up to 24mph or 27mph. Changing the speed limit doesn't add any power. The extra speed can only be realised downhill, with the wind behind you or when you pedal hard enough. The motor/controller combination are designed for the higher speed limit, so there shouldn't be any mechanical down-side. In fact I'm sure it's better for them than the constant cutting in and out of power at 15 mph.
just found those - great!

Although most eZee bikes and conversion kits can be de-restricted Cyclezee will not do this.

If a customer decides to de-restrict, they do so entirely at their own risk.

The only place in the UK where electric bikes may be ridden de-restricted is on private land with the land owners permission.

I am not sure of the rules relating to the Isle of Man or Channel islands

The Channel Islands have equivalent to the UK's EAPC regulations, 200 watts, 15 mph, throttle optional.

The Isle of Man appears to have no laws at all for e-bikes, though there are at least three in use on the island and probably more. Those owners know nothing about the legal position there and at least one dealer has sold/serviced e-bikes there. Technically therefore, e-bikes are likely to be regarded as motor vehicles which should be registered etc., but no-one in authority seems interested enough to do anything about them, either by legalisation or prosecution.

Hi Tony,

I did suspect that the Isle of Man had no regulations regarding electric bikes, I know their speed restrictions are very liberal.

We have sold kits to customers on the island but I don't know if they run them restricted or not.

In my youth, my cousin Douglas (his first name, my surname and the town where we stayed:confused:) and I used to go to the TT and I won't forget one evening riding a 250cc Yamaha climbing over the mountain from Ramsey to Douglas.

I managed to seize the engine at over 80 mph locking the back wheel leaving a long skid mark, before I pulled the clutch in:eek:

After letting the bike cool for a while, I managed to get the bike going again on one cylinder and crept slowly back to Douglas:eek:

That's true for us, but Gun ainm lives in the Outer Hebrides. I don't believe that the police have ever prosecuted anybody for anything there, let alone doing 16mph on an e-bike.
but you did go a lot faster than 16mph on the Sirocco CD...

And the name of a once famous British motorcycle brand, specialising in horizontally opposed twin cylinder machines. Pre-WW2 they were in-line twins, but post war they had a new design with 350 cc transverse engines BMW style. Nice looking, went well but occasionally suffered with crankshaft problems.

Douglas 90 plus 350 twin

That was a nasty near thing you suffered at speed, only happened to me once at speed pushing a Talisman Twin 250 sport too far, but like you, got out of that quickly.

Hi Tony,

I had forgotten about the Douglas boxer twins;)

The current Mrs. Douglas and myself spent our honeymoon on the island and stayed at ....... you guessed it, The Douglas Hotel in Douglas. I believe the name was changed shortly after our stay to something less common like Dave:rolleyes:
