When up gearing I would not jump too far too fast.

I run a 42 tooth narrow wide front chain ring with a 12/36 9 speed cassette and this allows you to pedal up to well over 20mph and still gives me a low enough bottom gear to allow me to climb steep off road climbs in eco in the 36 tooth bottom gear.

The garbaruk chain ring I put on has now covered 2572 miles! and I pair it with a cheap shimano HG400 12/36 cassettes with the current one now at 1172 miles and KMC chains.

A narrow wide chain ring is more robust and ensures your chain is unlikely ever to come off the chain ring (mine never has) and this particular chain ring has impressed. A lot of people who use their crank drive to commute on the road and may also use a dongle complain of wearing out their top gear 11 tooth cog in the rear cassette and the 12 tooth top gear cog on this cheap shimano rear cassette is just a little bit more resistant to wear than an 11 tooth cog.

I just checked and the cassette is currently £11.99 delivered on amazon prime.

I ride half my miles off road and do a high mileage commuting to work and back so a less expensive but robust drive train is just what I need.

On my 10 mile road ride home I always achieve close to and sometimes better than a 20 mph average speed for my 10 mile journey on a drive train that is covered in muck from my off road route to work, so my drive train gets a hard life.
