Parking on the pavement

What's the use though? Here in my London borough we have people parking every night and often all day long completely across pavements, blocking them and with one pair of wheels sitting on double yellow lines.

The borough's parking control office has been repeatedly informed and provided with photos showing the number plates, but nothing happens. Cutbacks have resulted in a free-for-all with virtually no control.

Long ago the police were responsible for parking control enforcement before that was removed from their duties and placed in local authorities hands. So we now have the ridiculous situation where a bored police officer and an accompanying PCSO patrol here and walk past the illegally pavement parked cars and vans, unable to do anything.

it's not only parking on the pavements. I've seen them parked on bus stops and opposite on the brow of hills, blind bends,on junctions and opposite wrong way round after dark, to name a few, and as you say the police , take absolutely no notice, but don't dare go a couple of miles over speed limits or you will get hammered. I suppose it's easy money

You should try living in a coastal tourist destination! I get shouted at for walking in the road: "Sorry, I can't walk on the footpath it is reserved for parking". They don't want to get out of the car to discuss further so I must look sufficiently annoyed, grumpy old man really is a fun place to be...

When someone starts driving up onto the pavement behind me I always stop to have a long look in my backpack for something I just remembered I needed to look at.

Worst case scenario they use their horn to move you out of the way because they are in a hurry to park on the footpath to answer their phone. Tablet out and take a photo always gets a lovely reaction. I need a "grumpy old man sending your number plate to the cops" tee-shirt. :D

The ability to give an instant £70 fine for pavement parking may encourage the councils to act..
I hope so. It used to in London long ago, but now councils seem more inclined to cut back on enforcement staff. And it's not just parking. Some are removing monitoring staff from CCTV rooms and at least one council has removed all their traffic cameras. Another has switched off all it's CCTV to save money, on the basis that they are old tech low res and they can't spend on updating the system.

There are times when I wonder if we are heading for a peculiar form of third world status, domestically poor but with advanced nuclear arms.

I'll take on the job. 50/50 on the ticket revenue. The council won't have to lift finger. Just give me the licence and I'll start tomorrow.

Plus, if no one is watching the camera output and detecting crimes, it saves more money because fewer people go through the (guffaw) justice system.

If you couldn't half park on the pavement outside my house, you would have to leave the whole car on the road. If the people did the same on the other side of the road, the whole road would be blocked (it's that narrow around here).

It's therefore essential to park with two wheels up around here. There is no other option. There's no way that Bristol would have a blanket fine for parking on the pavements.

This is a problem often made worse by builders who try to squeeze the maximum out of the land they are building on. This is made worse where I live by people not using their garages (their choice) . It seems odd that someone with a stealable asset that cost £20000 or more would leave it on the road and fill their garage with junk....

There aren't really any garages around here. The larger houses over the way sometimes have the front garden given over to a parking space but it's not that common.

Same on my estate Phill. In my section of 99 properties with 99 garages, less than 30 are in use for cars. A few are unlawfully* let to builders etc and the rest have junk in them.

* In breach of lease.

Our road was quite wide and people parked on both sides of the road with no problem. The council decided as a 'traffic calming measure' to narrow the road and double the width of the pavement to slow traffic down.

The end result is that everyone now parks half on the pavement to leave the road wide enough for traffic ~ so just another waste of money.
