The squeak on mine is specifically when the motor is freewheeling with no power applied. I've ordered some new tyres today so when they arrive during the week i'll strip it and give it a good clean up.

Any recommendations on grease?

I had the same problem on a new bafang cst motor and didn't get any joy from the supplier.
I traced it to being that clutchplate with the 3 plastic cogs on. Take yours out, stick your finger in the middle hole and try turning the rest and you may hear your squeak like I did. I replaced it with one of these -

Those replacement gears are not as strong as the blue ones, so only replace if absolutely necessary.

Those replacement gears are not as strong as the blue ones, so only replace if absolutely necessary.

As a last resort if he had to get that replacement clutchplate, would he be able to take the blue gears off his and swap them onto the new clutchplate? I didn't look at mine closely enough to see how/if they come off.

I have a long commute (13 miles) and the squeak unfortunately is from the motor - is it OK to continue to ignore it (the bike functions exactly otherwise as normal) or am I doing damage or is there risk of being left stranded (i.e. should I replace the clutch)? Many thanks

i would say that it's probably completely harmless. I've had lots of motors where noises came and went. they all quieten down with increasing miles. I had one Bafang CST that developed a very worrying click. You could feel it in the same position each rotation. I took it apart and found nothing wrong. After reassembly, it never did it again. That motor was so noisy when it was new that many people would have sent it back. Now, it's very smooth and quiet after about 400 miles.

grease always helps. If it's one of the bearings, spend £2-£4 on a new one. The quality of 8-Fun bearings is not great in comparison to what you can get on ebay.

A bit more grease wont do any harm. No need to replace any bearings unless the motor has had water in it.

it lives in an asgard lockup and has been dry otherwise too so hopefully it's just a minor case of pragmatic Chinese quality control

The odo and trip are in km, I do a return journey to my local apiary which is a tad over 11 miles by car and by bike the same journey reads 17.6 on my Oxy trip.

Weird I did the same journey again today but had the Garmin edge on the bike which recorded total mileage 10.6 miles once I checked the download, on looking at the lcd screen on the bike it is showing also 10.6 so it is reading trip in miles. I can only think I didn't reset the odo that day, looks like your 27 miles Planemo was 27 miles.

Ahh OK Neal I thought it was odd that we had different results! Glad we sorted it out, it does indeed appear then that although the legend shows KM it actually reads miles.

d8veh, do you know if the 11mah kit Oxy hub also strips down easily like selrahc's 13mah one? The hub markings on mine show BF1405H 60288-6.

I have managed to isolate the squeak I have and can now make it do it at will. If I lean the bike over to the right and apply sharp downward pressure to the left pedal at the bottom of crank stroke (producing a lateral load on the wheel) the squeak is there as clear as day. It makes no difference on rotational position of the wheel either. Whilst inspecting it all, I noticed that the freewheel bearings seem very rough as well.

The wheel nuts are very tight and it's not brake related as there was no difference with the caliper removed. The noise disappears with the stock wheel. I can only assume the noise is coming from the Oxy hub axle or bearings.

I am confident in most things mechanical and am happy to strip/grease the hub to try and sort it out but not if theres special tools needed etc.

I have to get it sorted out as it's not going away and I'm not enjoying riding due to it. I realise that sending it back to Oxy would be an option but the shipping hassles alone are something I could do without. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

It's a casstte motor, not a freewheel. You can normally take the spline off without stripping the motor. You just take the nuts off the axle, including the one/s inside and tug it off the motor. It has a bearing inside, which might be what's squeaking. Rather than stripping it, you cold try lying your bike on its side with the cassette upwards and squirting some Three In One oil into the gap beteeen the frame and the cassette. Leave it to soak in before lifting the bike.

Cheers, yes I meant to say cassette. Ok I will strip down as much as I am happy to, although I have visions of ball bearings and pawls springing out when the cassette comes off! Does the hub plate come off easily enough as well if I nust remove the 6 bolts? I will try and at least get to the bearings. I appreciate the 3 in 1 idea but I would much rather get to them properly to either regrease or replace. Chances are if they have run dry (which is what it sounds like) I would rather get new ones.
