^^ it seems OK, Eddie. I bought the Trek 2nd hand via e-Bay and converted it - am still using the original cassette / cranks and chain that came with the bike, having bankrupted myself at the time on the finest quality tools and accessories . Thankfully there's now a wee bit more in the piggy bank.
I expect the mech had seen some considerable use before I got hold of it. It's only a couple of sprockets on the rear cassette which give problems, but I've always had to be quite "decisive" with the combi-shifters ... might go for a double crankset if I replace it also as I always use assist on serious climbs .
