Edit- I think I may have posted this in the wrong thread-perhaps it should be in technical?

I recently bought a bike from an older member here Mike63 for a bargain price:). I am having the battery re-celled by BGA reworking after taking advice from various members on this forum, I was originally going to do it myself as I have access to a professional spot welder, but after careful consideration I decided to accept others advice and go with the professionals. As it happens the price differential would only have been about £100. I am taking BGA's advice and replacing the cells with the Boston Power cells.

This is what they had to say about my whitebait style battery replacement:
QUOTE
"Currently I have 2900mAh Panasonic NCR18650PF cells or NCR18650B 3400mAh cells. The capacity would be 17.4Ah or 17Ah. The Samsung INR18650-32E is no longer available which would have been exactly 16Ah. The only other alternative would be the Boston Power cells which would be around 15.5Ah or even better. The Boston Power cells have much higher cycle life in excess of 2000 and as much as 3000 compared to 500 of the 18650 cells.
The PF cells would cost £300 for recelling and B cells would be £325. The B cells are most expensive due to their high capacity and the build would be much lighter as the cell count is less than the PF option.
Boston Power would cost £350 and last several times more than any other cell used in ebike batteries."
ENDQUOTE

Has anyone any experience with the Boston Power cells?

I will be replacing the older style controller with a more updated one, so I am seeking advice on a replacement.

Many thanks, Tony.

The original one is as in the pictures:-IMG_20160811_105334.jpg IMG_20160811_114024.jpg

Is your motor sensored or sensorless? How big is the controller in milimeters?

Hi d8veh, thanks for the reply (and your previous welcome advice).
I'll have to pull it apart and measure it, I think it's a pretty standard size physically. I would think it would be a sensored motor as there are no external halls or magnets.
The motor is a rear hub 250w 36v with a green sticker 26 written on it. I presume 26" wheels.

When I've pulled it apart again I'll report back. Wifey duties call now!!

Cheers, Tony.

You can't guess whether it's a sensored motor because sensor motor controllers only work with sensored motors.

Sensored motors have three thick phase wires and at least five things wires.

I think the grey wire that is not connected is probably to put the controller into "learn mode" The dimensions are: 87mmx 32mm x 65mm, a small controller indeed.

Here are some more 'photos I took :

d8veh-
Looking at the pictures, the wires coming from the motor have 3 thick and 5 thin.

S06S from BMSBattery.com - about £60.
You must order a LCD and wheel-speed sensor to go with it. You can also get pedal sensor with more magnets if you want.

You can get the same controller from Panda Bikes in UK for about £100.

Thanks for this, I'll check them out. What is your take on the Boston Power batteries?
Cheers, Tony.

I've never tried them, but if Jimmy says they're good, I'm sure they will be.

Personally, I'd have gone for one of the BMSBattery batteries that have the included controllers. They make a neater installation and go up to 20 amps instead of 15, so a lot more power.

Skippy-
Sorry, don't call over £500 for a battery reasonable.
Cheers, Tony.

Obliged for this. Given the choice, I would always deal with a UK based outfit, even though they may be slightly dearer at least you have some sort of comeback/can talk to them. Support local is always best option.

Nice work Tony.....best of luck.....Mike
Mike-
Waiting on battery now, I'll probably fit one of the Panda kits with LCD and also get a second chainring, I find using the highest gear going downhill (even unassisted) my little legs are going at light speed to keep up!
All the best Tony.

You can change the rear gear cluster to a DNP one that has a 11T top gear instead of 14. How many cogs does it have? I have some 7 and 8 speeds if you want one.

Thanks d8veh, I did what you did and added another chainring to the front, I'll just use a twig when needed. Obliged for the offer, Tony
