Tried riding up a biggish hill ,(1/2 mile with a 1/3 mile over 10% gradient, peaking at 17.3% -according to mapometer.) It was fine, put in quite a bit of pedalling effort (which I don't mind) and slowed to 8mph at the steepest point.
Thanks for sharing your experience... but those words absolutely terrify me! Clearly, your 18A controller will not suit me at all! I think @saneagle's right - if I went for a hub conversion, it'd take a 48V 22A controller on a rear hub, to match or exceed the easy hill climbing ability of my BBS01B. (with at least one torque arm)

I would have thought that 18A at 48v should be enough for most people. You can adjust the maximum current in the settings of many controllers. It's possible that the supplier set the current to a lower value to reduce warranty complaints. It's always worth checking.

I'm 100kg and I run at 14A max. The only hills I have to really pedal hard are 30%. I even managed it after my lungs were full of blood clots.

Having said that, if you have too much current, you can always turn it down, but if your controller's maximum isn't enough, you can't turn it up.

The thing I am conscious about with hub motors is as you slow going uphill, the motor slows below its optimum speed, which I guess means you are likely to get less assistance
To be honest, when I pedal up that hill with my BBS02B (max current left at default setting : 22a) I slow to 10 mph, so I'm not sure it's as big an effect as I was expecting

Just realised something, front headlight (& lcd backlit) switches on fine using long + press. However, when I brake, the light flashes continuously while the brake is on (irrespective of whether the lights are on). Think I must have connected the front light to the rear light connection, but it's a pretty cool feature, rear light connection also is a brake light.
