Björn Rzoska, a keen cyclist heading up the Belgian Green party, is taking part in a 3-month experiment which aims to discover if speed pedelecs are a realistic alternative to commuting by car.

He will travel from his home to the Flemish Parliament in Brussels on a 45 km/h (28mph) electric bike, or ‘speed pedelec’, cycling approximately 100km each day.

Mr Rzoska is one of 15 people partaking in research being carried out by the Energy & Automation research group of the Belgian University KU Leuven Campus Gent.

What's the bike in the pic? Looks like an excellent commuter.
A Stromer of course! I will be following with interest the 100 km a day commute. Belgian moped plates are just as big as yours by the looks. Spain has compact moped plates and France between the two.

Looks like he and the other person are wearing a Cratoni s-pedelec helmet, I can't imagine myself pedalling even 50 km in a normal moped helmet...

The result will be yes, it is an alternative to the car for some. Shame we cannot have a parallel test here in the UK

From the linked story, the guy found his first commute 'not easy' due to a depleted battery.

Stromers come with big batteries, but 60-odd miles at speed will use a lot of juice - as he has found.

One might also ask why a Green Party politician is commuting so far, irrespective of the means of transport.

Sometimes you don't get to choose where you live, or finances don't allow it.
I'm touring England with a show this year, City to City transfers will be by car - daily commute will be electric bike. Could never afford to live there but still manage to be low impact in many other ways. You win some you lose some.
