Hi folks,
I'm Steve, live in HK (originally from UK), three decades of mountain biking & cycle touring under my belt. I live on a hugely hilly Island where temps are in the sweaty 30's over half the year. Much as I love riding I felt I wanted the option of longer exploring trips without the pain of slow summer hills so took the plunge and bought a Scott E-Genius 720+ back in May of this year. Took a while to find the site but glad I have, great resource. Keen to know how many folk have flown with their E-bike and if so were there any issues flying with a Lithium battery? Cheers all!

Welcome to the forum, Steve.
isn't it true that e-bikes are forbidden in HK?
are you based in the new territory?

No fly is the answer to your question and battery transport regulations are tougher by the day.

Hey Cheers, Yeah they are indeed illegal on road here, even to sell retail now as well. Department of Transport is just shamefully archaic in recognising the benefits.. To be honest I keep a low profile and stay on the back roads, there's only one other MTB Pedelec owner I know of here, the police seem more intent on catching those blatantly riding cheap Chinese twist'n'go machines on cycle paths that stand out more.
Interesting note about flying & batteries, yes I had feared that was the case and that regulations had been tightened in April.

Hello, welcome!

I think the current state of play on flying with batteries is a maximum of 100Wh (so basically a laptop). It is possible to get up to 160Wh with airline approval in advance and in a piece of equipment, not as a spare. Anything over 160Wh (e-bike, Segway etc) is not allowed.
