Hello folks :)

I've just joined and introduced myself on the 'welcome' thread (is it a thread or a forum).. anyway, I digress.

Having had a very short ride on a Wisper at the Norfolk Bike Show at the Forum over the weekend (really informative and friendly guys there), I'm now thinking quite seriously about purchasing an electric bike. I don't have a fortune to spend -hoping to find something close to the £1,000 mark -but happy to spend a bit more if it makes sense to do so for the right bike.

I'm in my 50s, not that I guess age matters, am of modest height (5'4") and looking for something to commute around 3 miles to and from work and use for leisure (weather permitting).

I've done a bit of research - well, read a lot of articles which are informative and confusing at the same time - lol. I've two models in my thoughts at the moment and they are:-

1) Wisper 705se (maybe the Torque version as well) or
2) Cruiser Standard Floral (yep, I'm a girly girl) sold through eRanger

Both seem to be fairly similar in terms of gears, disc brakes, tyres, pedal and throttle assist -not sure how the batteries compare (Wisper 375wh or 575wh - Cruiser 36V 10AH). The cruiser one is dutch style (similar to the Dawes bike I own) and comes with a rather natty front basket (I did say I'm a girly girl remember and yes, looks do matter).

Anyway - I know folks will say it's best to go try a few out, and I will -but I don't think the eRanger one is available locally to me (Norfolk). But I would appreciate any thoughts, views, advice given on these or any others you feel should be on the shopping list.

Thanks :)

Hi Suseka,

We saw you at Norfolk Cycle show and are based in Cromer, Norfolk. You would be welcome to pop down for a longer test ride. We have several Wispers in stock which you could try as well as more than 20 e-bikes in total. This includes the Wispers 705 Torque model (£1499/£1699) and the 705SE (£999/£1199) which is more money but also worth looking at. The 705 Torque has a torque sensor which works differently essentially the harder you pedal the more assistance you get plus a rotational sensor mode as well, best of both worlds. The SE models have a rotational sensor which do not require you to pedal with much pressure to get assistance.

The SE models are also available in blue and red.

All our customers now get a free loan bike in the event of a problem. We also have an offer on at the moment where you get a free annual service with parts included.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Kind regards,
David

I'm still at the "thinking about it" stage so can't offer anything helpful by way of recommendation but you've already figured out that trying a few is going to be your best bet - hope you find something to suit! Since you plan to use the bike to commute, it's probably also worth checking whether your employer offers a "cycle to work" scheme which could help fund the purchase.

David, the 705SE is the one that's cheaper than the Torque so did you mean to highlight something else that might suit Susan when you said "We have more than 20 bikes in stock including Wispers 705 Torque model (£1499/£1699) and the 705SE which is more money but also worth looking at."?

Hi Suseka
There are two shops in Norwich which stock Juicy Bikes, which you may like to add to your comparison list. Both will be able to offer test rides.
Hope you get a chance to visit.

Might take you up on that offer :) do you supply through your resellers? In which case for me it would be though the guys in Cromer, Norfolk. I found out today that they are on the list of my employers cycle to work scheme, which as you'll know has a £1,000 limit :)

Thanks to all for your input - but can anyone comment on the Cruiser sold through eRanger? I have to admit i'm leaning towards the Wisper.. but online the Cruiser is offered at £895 dropped from £1,400. It seems to offer a similar spec, but it's difficult to compare the battery specs. Not sure why the Cruiser has been discounted.. could be a bargain, maybe an older model or something.

Will be heading off to a local e-bike shop in the next couple of days and see where that gets me.

Hi Susan,

That Cruiser looks OK for the money. (I've never seen one, so I'm just going by the spec).

The components are pretty standard Chinese stuff, same as you find on most sub £1000 bikes and £895 is about the correct price.

To compare batteries, multiply the voltage x Ah giving Wh. So the cruiser is 360 Wh, pretty much the same as the smaller Wisper battery.

It's difficult to assess range without knowing terrain/weight/fitness/effort, but 12Wh/mile is a reasonable approximation, giving 30 miles for 360Wh, 47 miles for the 575

Have you looked at the Woosh and Kudos models, which will be similar in price?

The original poster said she is happy to spend more than £1000 for the right bike. We always recommend trying a bike with a torque sensor and one without as they are very different to ride. Bikes with a torque sensor are normally more expensive but not always preferred over a cadence/rotational sensor. Therefore I was suggesting trying the torque to see which type of sensor she preferred. There is no right or wrong answer on which people prefer just a case of ensuring the right bike for the right person.

Sorry David, we may be at cross purposes - I'd understood you to be saying the SE was more money than the Torque but I'd just taken your sentence a different way than you intended it, I suspect.
No worries sorry if that was not clear put the prices in brackets after each model but I will try and be clearer in the future :)

We generally have baskets in stock. However if you have a particular basket type/style in mind you can always email us a link and we can order it for you from one of our suppliers.
